What would your spartan collection be?

I really like these little scenario games. I guess not so much a scenario in this instance, but still, I enjoy it. Let's see...

I'm splitting this up because I'm really having to think about it.

Well, the first thing on the list is going to be the one weapon that has the absolute most versatility, and can on its own adequately handle most defensive tasks. And in my opinion, that weapon is a .357 magnum revolver with a 4" barrel. It's still concealable if you dress around it, it still has the range and accuracy to be used as a field gun, and it has the stopping power for a home defense gun.

As for the actual weapon, it's a toss-up between a S&W 686, and a Ruger GP-100, for two different reasons. Aimtech makes a scope mount for the 686 that doesn't require the sights be removed, but the GP-100 is a sturdier design, so it can handle hotter loads, which in my opinion means it can be relied upon in more different situations.

If it were going to be my one single gun to cover everything, I'd go with the 686 because of the Aimtech scope mount, but because there's still 9 more weapons I can choose on this list, I'm going with the Ruger GP-100.

So 1st on the list: Ruger GP-100 4" .357 Magnum

Now there's the individual categories of concealed carry, home defense, and field gun, in that order for me. Concealed carry, in my mind means a semi-automatic pistol. I prefer single action trigger pulls, and I prefer reloading with magazines. I also find autos to be easier to carry in general, because there's no need to consider the width of the revolver's cylinder.

That said, I'm still going for versatility here, so it's not going to be a pocket-rocket. I'd want it to be slim enough for easy carry, but still be a full sized pistol with a full power cartridge, and in this case that means 1911 Commander. Yes, I know a 4" is considered a 'compact' on 1911s, but in just about every other pistol design on the market, a 4" barrel is standard, and a 5" barrel is considered a longslide, so that's kind of just splitting hairs.

Now to decide on caliber, .45 or 10mm. To be honest, I can easily picture myself owning a .45 without owning a 10mm, but I can't picture myself owning a 10mm without also owning a .45, so I'm going with the .45 on this one.

I also like weaponlights, and I like lasers. I know lots of people say weaponlights are bad because you have to point the weapon at whatever you're trying to illuminate. I do not agree with them. Weaponlights also change the outline of the weapon so that even if it prints, it doesn't print 'gun', so this 1911 will have a rail.

I'd probably end up going with a semi-custom build like a Fusion, or build it myself from parts, but for now a Springfield Champion Operator is a good representative of it.

2nd on my list: Springfield Champion Operator .45

Home defense is pretty simple. Stopping power. Period. There really isn't much else to consider that you would have to trade stopping power for. It's going to be indoors, so you don't need long range accuracy, and it's inside your own home so you don't need it to be a concealable weapon. I still believe that the 12 gauge shotgun is the king when it comes to stopping power.

I'm going with my Mossberg 500. Saigas are tempting, but the receiver is too long, so even with an 18" barrel, it's a long and cumbersome weapon.

3rd on the list: Mossberg 500 12ga

A fied gun, to me, is still a weapon for defense, just in different conditions. It's what I would want to use to defend myself outdoors, in the field. That means a semi automatic rifle with long range accuracy and power. It also has to be reasonably compact, because I'm going to be keeping the rifle in my vehicle, because if I'm defending myself in the outdoors, I probably took my vehicle to get there.

This is becoming a pretty tough choice for me. It's between my Robinson Armament XCR in 5.56, or my JLD PTR-91. The XCR is lighter, quicker, with better ergonomics, and mine is set up so it can hold 2 spare magazines on the rifle, but it's still just a .223 rifle, and even the caliber conversions don't get its range up that far. I still have to go with the PTR-91 and the heavier, longer range .308 cartridge.

4th on my list: PTR-91 .308

marlin m1895 .45-70 guide gun
marlin xl7 .30-06
ruger 10/22
ruger single six
springfield XD 9mm with the 4inch barrel
1911 commander size (4 inch barrel full size frame) .45acp
1895 winchester in .405 win
remington 870 12ga
ak-74
walther ppk in .380

Why would I need 10 guns?
1) S&W M64. Maybe a Model 65 instead but the FBI load is enough in the real world.
2) Colt Huntsman
3) Marlin XS7 7-08
4) Mauser 98, rebarreled to .30-06
5) 12g pump, I've got an Ithaca 37. Whatever brand floats your boat.
6) Marlin 60
7-10) toys like a large caliber single action revolver. Nothing necessary.

10s to easy

1) .38 Colt Diamondback
2) Marlin 1894 .38/.357
3) Ruger Red Label 20g SxS
4) S&W mod 41

Leaves six choices one for your favorite long range shooter in your flavor
.50 cal, 338 Laupa, 30-06, 308 etc...

Hmmm. I know I would likely do some things differently than I've done before so the list reflects changes in my thinking over the years. Let's get started and see where I end up.

1. 12 gauge pump shotgun for home defense.
2. Identical backup of 12 gauge for home defense.
3. Semi auto rifle for multipurpose. Since we're going lean, I'd likely get an M1A. I could be talked into getting a mini-14 in either 223 or 7.62x39.
4. Identical backup semi-auto rifle to above.
5. Pistol for secondary home defense weapon and CCW. I'd likely go with a Springfield XD in 45 ACP (it's not my favorite but it has good features).
6. Identical pistol - Springfield XD in 45 acp.
7. Bolt action rifle in 30-06 for hunting.
8. Lever action rifle in 30-30 (I love them too much not to have one in my spartin collection).
9. A side by side shotgun for clays and bird hunting.
10. I'd probably get a 22 rifle. Likely it would be a Ruger 10-22.

We could argue about the wisdom of getting duplicates like I did above. However, for anything truely important, I'm a big fan of duplication in case something goes wrong I've got a backup that is ready to go.

I kinda got stuck trying to think of what I'd go with past the first four. I'm just really tempted to go with some of my favorites, even though they don't really have a practical purpose beyond that. But I did catch myself, and figured that I should have .22lrs to go with my other weapons, for inexpensive practice.

5th weapon: S&W 617 4" .22lr
6th weapon: Ruger 22/45 5" bull barrel
7th weapon: Ruger 10/22

After the first 7, there's a big urge in me to cheat, and get a Glock with conversion barrels, and one of those MGI MARCK-15s with all the caliber change uppers and mag wells and stuff like that. But to be honest, I'd just have to go with my 3-gun set.

8th weapon on the list: HK USP45 Tactical
9th weapon on the list: NEF Pardner Pump Protector
10th weapon on the list: Robarm XCR

So the final list:

1: Ruger GP100
2: Springfield Champion Operator
3: Mossberg 500
4: PTR-91
5: S&W 617
6: Ruger 22/45
7: Ruger 10/22
8: HK USP45 Tactical
9: NEF Pardner Pump Protector
10: Robarm XCR

And more important than that, which ones out of this list do I actually own?

1:
2:
3: Mossberg 500
4: PTR-91
5:
6:
7:
8: HK USP45 Tactical
9: NEF Pardner Pump Protector
10: Robarm XCR

....This is why I like these mental exercises. It makes me rethink my shopping list.

10 firearms:

1. Two Marlin XL7 rifles in .270 Winchester (scoped)
2. Two Mossberg 500 combo 12 gauge pump shotguns
3. Two H&R single shot 20 gauge shotguns
4. One Marlin 1894C leverguns in .357 magnum (scoped)
5. Two Taurus revolvers (One 4", One snubbie) in .357 magnum
6. One Marlin semiauto .22 lr.... (scoped)

No assault guns needed.:neener:

My Are:

1.Savage110FP Tactical .308
2.Ruger MK II
3.Taurus PT1911 SS .45
4.Taurus PT92 SS 9mm
5.Colt Detective Special (3Gen)
6.Mossberg Persuader .12
7.Mosin Nagant (Carbine)
8.Mauser (Turkish) 8mm
10.Kahr CW9
11.AK-47 (Romanian)

10 guns

Rifles:
.22 Bolt
30-06 Bolt
7.62.39 semi-auto

Shotgun:
870 12 gauge

Handguns:
Smith and Wesson K-frame .38 or .357 4" barrel
Small frame .38 for carry
Full size 9 mm or .45ACP pistol
.22 pistol or revolver

That's only 8
So I'll add 2 more:

M-1 Garand
Smith and Wesson K-frame 2" snubnose in .38

Well... like many my collection fills certain needs/wants/roles....

I "need"

Hunting

1 - 30/30 bolt action (Hunting Daughter's gun)
2 - 30/06 bolt action (Hunting, My gun)
3 - Black Powder Rifle (In-case I have no success with the above guns)
4 - Shotgun (I have 3 but I only need one, so for the purposes of this game we will say my side by side 12 gauge)
5 - .22/.22MAG revolver (Trapping gun, all purpose hunting side arm)

Home Defense

6 - 1911 ("Nightstand Gun")
7 - 12 Gauge Pump

Personal Protection

8 - Bulldog revolver (.357)

Long Term Defensive Home Stand

9 - AR15
10 - AK104 in .223

I have some other guns that I guess I do not need, so if anyone wants them let me know :)

1911/BHP-general purpose handgun
Browning BuckMark- everyone needs a 22 pistol
Marlin 39 Mountie- 22 rifle
Smith J frame- primary concealed carry
Enfield P-17 30-06- general purpose hunting rifle

Absolute Spartan list- doesn't require 10 guns.

Ruger Single Six convertible or a .22 semi, like the Mark II Standard, or a S&W K22 or kit .22.
Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin 39A or Bolt .22.

IOW, I feel that the Spartan list requires a .22 pistol and .22 rifle. Pick what you prefer.

So, that's 2 of my 10.

Hunting rifle - Marlin 336 in .30-30 is my preference, but I can see the argument to get a .308 bolt action or Savage 99 instead.
Hunting shotgun - A 20 guage SxS or a Mossberg 500 with a short and long barrel, again in 20 guage, will fill all my shotgun needs.

That's four.

Defense: A S&W 642 is all the pistol I really need, unless I'm expecting my pistol to work against large creatures and not just people. Then I will add a reasonable bigger revolver. Candidates are dictated partly by how big the critters are that I need to protect myself from, but for me would include any S&W .357 K or L frame, and any Ruger single action in .357 or .44 Magnum or .45 Colt.

Call that one 1 to 2, so five, and maybe six.

Long guns for defense - it's a little bit ... of overkill, for most, to have a dedicated defense rifle. Not unreasonable, nothing wrong with it, and I have one, but it's overkill. If we're going for the Spartan thing, and just having what we need, then that Marlin .30-30 will do for a defense rifle very, very well. And that short barrel mounted on the Mossberg will be very adequate for a defense shotgun.

So, for Spartan purposes, I can do this with five guns. Gun six, the big revolver, and gun seven, the dedicated defense rifle, still keep me way under the 10 gun rules.

So, if I really get to have ten, I'm going to buy a couple of Ruger Vaqueros (thus the big revolver) and a matching lever rifle and go play cowboy games. :D And I'll be at 9 guns then, so if I see something that I just have to have, like a 1911 or something, I can add that in.

But I would be very comfortable at 5. That's what Spartan means to me - what do you have to have to get the job done. .22 rifle and pistol, one centerfire rifle, one shotgun, one centerfire pistol. Bases are covered, job is done.

A spartan collection only requires six guns:

(1) 12 Ga. Shotgun
(2) .22 LR rifle
(3) Center-fire rifle (your choice of hunting round)
(4) .357 revolver
(5) Semi-auto pistol (your choice of defense or competition round)
(6) AK or AR

.41 or .44 Magnum revolver
Ruger .357 revolver

Colt .45 auto
.380 acp

.22 bolt rifle
.22 auto rifle
Marlin .357 model 1894 rifle
.270 Win. bolt rifle
.30-06 rifle bolt rifle

12 ga. shotgun

or a reasonable facimile...

I'll play along. Guns I own are in bold. Ten guns for all aspects of life:

Rifles:
1) Model 81 BLR in 257 Roberts, good all range gun for anything except elk & bear
2) BAR in 30-06 Springfield, good all range gun for anything with easy to find ammo
3) Model 41 Remington 22LR, great for plinking & small game (my very first gun)
4) FNAR, fun range gun

Handguns:
5) Browning 1911-22, for the varmint or two you might encounter hunting
6) FNP-45, good for HD

Shotguns:
7) Model 97 Winchester, who doesn't love the original assault shotgun
8) Browning A5 Sweet 16, anything but duck gun

9) Browning Gold Fusion 3" 12ga, all use gun
10) FN SLP Mark I, 9 rounds of 3" mag is great for HD

In my life though, I do see myself swapping out the Gold Fusion for the new Maxus due to the new style magazine plug & forearm. Much easier to work with on a Maxus than the Gold Fusion.

1911 - full size, carry/USPSA/HD gun. Don't have one yet, but I'm looking at the Kimbers.
Savage 111 30-06: Hunting rifle.
Ruger SR9: Other carry/USPSA/HD gun. I have one, and I really like it. Its not going anywhere.
Smith and Wesson J-Frame: Deep concealment carry gun.
GLOCK 26/27: Only GLOCK I shoot well. If the 1911 breaks, I can use it to back up the Ruger, or vice versa. May change to a GLOCK 29SF if I like those...
FAL/M1A: Battle Rifle for 3Gun/unconvential HD/ FUN!
AK: 3gun/HD/FUN!
.44 Magnum Revolver: Don't have one yet, but probably a S&W29 or a Ruger Redhawk. This would be a woodsgun. Also, I really like the Dirty Harry Movies.

If I had too, I could probably do without the AK and the J-Frame, but well, I won't.
