I have a model 27-2 nickel plated .357 with 4 inch barrel serial #N639xxx I would like to know the year of this gun and what it is worth and why it has such a big hammer and trigger ,it is in very good condition and any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I have a 27-2 5" barrel with N627XXX and, like yours, it was built in 1980.

The large trigger and hammer are the target trigger and target hammer. These usually come with the target grips as well.

Here's a picture of mine (It was $450 a few years ago):

Welcome to the board! ;)

Virtually all 4" 27-2s were made 1979-81. Prior to this the 4" barrel was a special order item and is very seldom seen. I have seen one in the past 40 years (made in 1963 as a presentation piece). Wish I had bought it.

Also note that many if not most of the 4" 27-2s lack the pinned barrel. Apparently S&W ran out of the -2 barrels and started using the unpinned -3 barrels on -2 marked frames. I call these the 27-2.5 models.
