What's in Your Pocket?

Used to carry a LCR the majority of the time, had a LC9 that I packed occasionally, just didn't feel the weight justified a couple more rounds. But that changed when I got my Hellcat, with more than double the round count, now it resides in my pocket most days.

Keys and the Kershaw clipped to my pocket. Weapon stays where it belongs iwb whether it be shorts or jeans. A good belt solves all issues with iwb carry...

Kel-Tec P32 with hard chrome slide most of the time in a DeSantis holster. Other times Taurus TCP with hard chrome slide in Mika pocket holster. S&W 642 or Colt Det. Spec in Mika pocket holster if I am feeling like going with a bigger caliber. Mika pocket holsters are the best I have found!

Wallet, keys, knife (or two), cellphone, and possibly a KelTec P3AT. Everything else (in this case a revolver like a S&W Model 638), goes in a DeSantis SOF-TUCK IWB holster.

I also carry a 638 in a softuck when I can't get away with a glock 23 in the same. On the rare occasion when I'm not wearing a belt (I basically live in jeans), I'll throw the 638 in a pocket. I'm just way less likely to get a fast draw and a good grip with pocket carry so it really is a last resort.

I don't own a gun small enough to pocket carry comfortably. If I did I would carry it IWB as I do my 26oz SP 101 and my Shield. I do carry a folding knife with a pocket clip sometimes. In my situation I don't see any advantage to pocket carry.

In circumstances where I decide to pocket carry, it's always my Kahr CM9. I have a Crimson Trace Laserguard installed and I carry it in a custom made pocket holster. ("Custom made" sounds so much cooler than "home made", lol!)

I made the holster out of .28" Kydex. This is thinner than the Kydex I normally use for IWB/OWB holsters. The point here was for the holster to add almost no width to the gun.

Here it is next to a Desantis pocket holster.

I kept the outside (for right pocket carry) of the holster flat to reduce printing and did all of the contouring on the inside. I also gave the whole holster a slightly rounded contour to fit the curve of my leg. The extended tab helps stabilize the holster in the pocket and keep it from turning, while the hook part keeps the holster from pulling out of my pocket when I draw the pistol. I'm thinking about adding some sort of rubberized grip tape to the outside to further keep it in place during a draw, especially in looser pockets like those in my cargo shorts.

With 7 rounds of 9mm in the pistol and a spare 8-round mag, I feel fairly well armed, even if I don't have my normal IWB loadout of 15 rounds of .45acp plus a 14-round spare.

Colt New Cobra. Nice fit in the front pocket of my overalls. I bought a holster, but like the carry without.
external hammer, but it doesn't snag when drawn.

Charter Undercover seems to sneak in more often than anything else. More often than my Pitbull, more often than my 686+. It just seems to fill the role of a very light, very reliable, pocket revolver.

Super sweet trigger for a gun under $300 too.

Coat pocket or glove box, the Undercover .38 seems to always be close at hand.

A few months back I gave pocket carry a try. Didn't work because I wear jeans, all the time. First attempt after buying a 642 my wife said is that the new gun you bought in your pocket? I just can't bring myself to start wearing baggy pants just to carry a little gun in my pocket. Yes, I'm old and grumpy and stuck in my ways. And get off my lawn! (smile)

I have gone on a pocket gun frenzy this year, and I don’t even carry anymore. The things I have that I would pocket carry are...

Slide guns-
Glock 42
Mauser 1914 (32acp)
Phoenix HP22

revolvers
Rhino .357
Miroku Liberty Chief 38
Charter Undercover 38
S&W safety hammerless 38sw
S&W single action 38sw
S&W 30-1 32swl
RG 32swl
Arminius HW3 22

5 of those have been bought or traded for in the last 6 months. I need to focus on longer barreled revolvers for a while. Preferably older S&W L and N frames, and a Russian or Schofield.

Grips are the big thing (or rather, the small thing) on a J frame. I have large hands. The J frame handle is absolutely TINY. I tried "boot grip" type handles for a while, but by golly, they just hurt. Sting the web of my hand because they're just so small and don't fill my hand. A Pachmayr compac grip handles well, but that definitely makes it no longer a pocket gun (and I do NOT wear skinny jeans). If it can't be pocket carried, and has to be worn on a belt, I might as well carry something else much better.

I finally got a set of the wraparound Taurus rubber grips and fitted them to my Chief's Special. You have to carefully redrill the locator pin holes, but that's about it. By golly, they help a lot. They fill up (some) at the web of my hand, and the gun doesn't sting me nearly as bad anymore. And still not much larger than a "boot grip". The rubber is VERY tacky, though, and it's a pocket-grabbin' SOB. A piece of black electrical tape around the bottom of the butt takes care of that (and it covers the Taurus logo! :D ).
