I am wondering about the case hardness of different brands and/or specific loads of .22 LR ammo. Been fooling with a gun that is finicky with ignition. A new mainspring helped some, but not a complete fix. Would like to just use soft cased ammo and see if that makes it 100%, enough to plink with without misfires.

My experience in the past is that CCI mini-mags have the hardest cases when used in an old Remingtom Rolling Block that had a rough chamber. I don't know about the softest tho.

Thanks for any info.

I, too, have generally found the CCI cases to be the toughest.

Im not sure who makes the softest cases though, since my guns work with just about everything. However, I think that Remington makes the softest cases.

.22 ammo is cheap, so my advice is to buy a box of everything and see what your guns like. :)

Malamute;

Try plain old Federal Classic in the 550 box. Friend of mine tightened up his 10-22 by setting the barrell back and facing off the bolt. He borrowed some Federal and discovered that it would slam fire with the Federals. Didn't happen with any other ammo he tried. Fired casings showed no firing pin marks.
