Seen alot of posts on here where alot of folks state they don't like Rem-Oil. I like it but just because of the thin coating it leaves once dried. I use it regularly for all my pistols and my ARs, so if their is a downside or negative effect or a failure to lubricate I would really like to know what it is so I can consider other lube options.
Thanks

There is nothing drastically wrong with Rem-Oil, but I prefer oils/lubes like CLP (in the little bottle, not the spray) that stay where you put them instead of running all over and leave a visible film even after a couple hundred rounds of shooting.

It's okay for a light, protective coat on parts. It's too thin and dries out too fast for me to like it as a lube for autoloaders.

Being a total novice, it's the only gun oil I've ever bought. And when it comes in a 10 oz spray can for $5 it's cheap and will likely last so long that I won't soon need to try any other brand.

As for the smell, yeah, it smells like oil, but it's certainly not offensive. It's not like the nasty scent of gun cleaners.

Absolutely nothing wrong with it if you're a Rem-boy. And spray cans suck.

Apparently only pedophiles who spend their vacations in the arctic clubbing baby seals use Rem Oil. At least that is the impression I got once when I moved back to Alabama after a long stint in Florida. I went into the local gunshop and asked for some Rem Oil. YOu should have seen the looks. "We only use and carry CLP". I left and went to wally world.

Correct. That is it's best use in my humble opinion. I use other lubes but a light spray and wipe down on the outside is nice for my guns.

Its not you, its a cultural thing.

I don't know about you all, but I can't get the smell of Breakfree off my hands when I use it. Remoil is a lot more forgiving THAT way.

I have never seen a refinery that produces just "Gun Oil" has anybody else. I also find it amazing that a grown man would pay $10.00 an ounce for oil. I build custom 1911 hand guns and charge a pretty penny for them. That said, I tell my customers that lubrication is as follows..."if it turns oil it, if it slides grease it." I supply the new owner with a bottle of light weight oil and a bottle of grease. In about 85% of the cases I get a call asking me what that lube was because it was fantastic and their guns have never worked so good and do I have any more. I tell them sure come on down just to see the look on their faces when I refill the oil from a Marvel Mystery Oil Can and refill the Grease from a can of Wheel Bearing Grease.

I work on cars.

Breakfree aint so bad. Motor oil and road grime comes out easy, but the smell of brake fluid, bearing grease, gear oil, and trans fluid are worse, and dont come out so easy...

And UNlike car work, vinyl/latex/purple (starts with an "n") gloves can be worn while doing gun work.

i wouldn't waste money on rem oil. it's simply inferior to most other products.

to put it into perspective, you can keep your AR running on urine if it comes to that (i'll take Pat Roger's word on that one), so it's not that rem oil doesn't work. it's that it doesn't work long enough.

when i was in junior high, in the mid-80s, and all i owned was a beater rem1100 12ga, and i could only afford a box or two of shells with the money i got for christmas, and cleaned the gun after every use, and sometimes just cause i had nothing better to do... rem oil did everything i needed it to.

now, not so much
