I like the Ruger Compact rifle. I have thought about getting one but my first model Remington model 7 with 18" barrel and walnut stock are just too close to justify buying one. The model 7 is a very good brush gun its self. Mine is in 7-08 and has a 2x7 Leupold scope on it and came with factory open sights. I really like that round.
i like to find a m7 in 7saum and make it a switch barrel in 35saum.

That's a hard to beat combo. I couldn't find one locally prior to buying the ruger. I would love to have iron sights and quick release rings ,just to change things up.

The term "Brush Gun" has evolved because deer are so fond of thick, brushy, areas during deer season. One area I hunt is almost a jungle but to avoid shooting through lots of brush there is an elevated ladder stand to allow shooting on a downward angle into the brush instead of a longer shot through the brush. It's in a shotgun area so the fully rifled 870 12 ga. gets the nod. In a rifle area, in thick woods, I've always considered a lever action 30-30 to be a classic brush gun along with my buddies Marlin lever in 35 Rem.. Here's the 870 at the base of that ladder stand with some of the IMG_2165.JPG jungle visible in the background. If I wasn't about 20 ft. up some deer could pass by well within range and I'd never even see 'em !

I have a 30-30 Marlin 336 that I could use as a brush gun but I'm thinking of getting a Ruger Preditor in 6.5 creedmore.

I don't think the 6.5 would punch through brush like a 45/70 might but it's a fairly light compact gun with a good cartridge .
