Same as my woods gun: Remington Model 7 in .308; HS Precision stock; Leupold 2-7X Compact mounted in the conventional location.

There was a time here in the Missouri Ozarks when 30-30 and deer rifle were used interchangeably to describe a tool for killing deer. Most of my hunting companions used either a 30-30 or 35 Rem. in both Marlin and Winchester levers.
I still hunt with one although I would not kill a deer again for it. I like setting in a deer stand watching the sun rise and the occasional deer pass by. I let them all pass

I have a few that would be considered short-range, close-cover guns:

.357 Mag Rossi '92
.45 Colt Rossi '92
.44 Mag Winchester '94 (Peep sights)
Three .30-30 Win Winchester '94's (One with peep sights)
.35 Rem Marlin 336 (Scoped)
.45/70 Govt Marlin '94 (Peep sights)

I guess it depends on what I may encounter and the distances involved to choose which one to carry in the woods...

Stay safe!

I have five "brush guns": a Savage Model 99, sighted with a Redfield "WideField" 2 3/4x5 scope, chambered in .358 Winchester; a Winchester (Miroku) Model 1886 Lightweight, sighted with a Williams receiver sight, chambered in 45-70 Government; a Ruger Model MKII "International", sighted with a Leupold "VariXII" 1x4x scope, chambered in .308 Winchester; a Winchester Model 94, sighted with a Williams receiver sight, chambered in 30-30 Winchester and a fifties era Remington Model 760, sighted with a Williams receiver sight, chambered in 30-06 Springfield.

I have to say that the Model 99 is probably my favorite; after all, it says it's a "Brush Gun" right in the Savage catalog! ;)

I have always thought of a Brush Gun as defined by its stopping power and fast handling in tight conditions.

One that I use is a TC Contender pistol,10 inch barrel in 357 Maximum. I also use a Rossi M92 lever gun in 44-40.

My other Brush Gun is a little more unusual.

It is a repro of a British Calvary Carbine. 16 inch barrel, rifle sights, musket furniture. The barrel is a 75 caliber (11ga) smooth bore. It's a real blaster. I can shoot either round ball or buckshot.

Didn't know I needed a flintlock until I saw this rifle! That is just awesome...

Tell me a little bit more about that 357 Max, I just got a 357 Max barrel for my Encore. Thinking about what to feed it for deer.

That smooth bore sure is unusual! Bet it's effective though.

The Max can shoot any 357 mag bullet but it better be well built. You can also use 35 Rem bullets. Most of the Max shooters I know seem to like bullets in the 180gr range.

Mines a work in progress, going to o break her in this year. Ruger compact .308 with a Weaver 1-3 scope. With my new aquired 44 special blackhawk as a backup and will take a shot if the opportunity presents itself. Past brush guns have been 336ss 30-30, and a Marlin 1895stp a few years back (should have never got rid of it)

I like the Ruger Compact rifle. I have thought about getting one but my first model Remington model 7 with 18" barrel and walnut stock are just too close to justify buying one. The model 7 is a very good brush gun its self. Mine is in 7-08 and has a 2x7 Leupold scope on it and came with factory open sights. I really like that round.
