Hey THR!

I've got an opportunity to go Hog hunting in Hawaii as a guest with my older brother! :D

I'm now considering a good hog gun!

What's are your favorites THR? Pics are awesome! Any Handgun, Rifle, or Shotgun is fair game!
 
I love my glock 20 with a lonewolf 6.61inch barrel and Underwood 220grain hardcast bullets. I just use plain old iron sights, nevertheless hog hunting is an amazing rush with any firearm.
 
Probably my bolt action .444 Marlin.... Hits 'em like a sledgehammer.

I also like my AR when I want to take multiples out of a sounder, my bow when I want to be quiet, an my .270 WSM when I want to hit them with a larger bullet going over 3,000 FPS.


Basically, anything will do the job if you are accurate. Look at some gunships and find a gun that you like and make it your favorite. I will say that hunting them with a handgun is a completely different challenger, and I would look into the ranges that you will be shooting before setting your heart on that.


I forgot to add, 12 ga slugs also work quite well for leaving them DRT.

Depends on the distance at which you expect to encounter the pigs. I like a 12 gauge slug gun with rifled barrel and 770 grain cast-lead full-bore slugs for close in work or my 30-30 lever action carbine. For longer shots I use a medium power rifle- .270 or 30-06 with a low power 2-8 Leupold scope. Good hunting.

I've used several. AR in .223 was quite successful, but leaves little margin of error. A Ruger #1 in 45-70 works REALLY well with a lot of room for 'not quite' perfect shots. Win model 70 in .300 mag also works wonders.

Ruger new model hunter in .44 mag will do a number on hogs if you are close enough to place your shots well. A really fun endeavor!
 
This morning I'm going to shoot 3 pigs in the head with a .38 special 148 grain wadcutter. They're in the trap, I'm just getting my morning coffee first before I set up to butcher. :D Thread to come.

I like my .308 for about anything, but any deer rifle is fine for hogs. Need a heavyish bullet for the caliber for light calibers like .243, but I just shoot the same Nosler BT 150 grain in my .308 that I deer hunt with, kills 'em dead.

My .30-30 contender is my favorite hunting pistol. I've taken hogs with a .357 magnum, though, even one with my 3' carry that I stumbled upon on my place one day, though he was only 80 lbs on the hoof. Good eatin', though.

I shoot 'em with whatever I have on me in the trap.

Almost anything will work. I don't trap hogs so I either still-hunt them or use my Boykin to bay them up. When using the dog, I always carry a shotgun with 00 buckshot .. for the dog's safety. It does the trick up close.

A Blackhawk in .45 Colt works too.
 
Marlin 1895 in 45/70 with 405 Gr hardcasts backed up by my 7.5 stainless SBH in 44 mag with 240 Gr hardcasts. In close, or at distance, I have more than enough gun. And with hard casts, I don't destroy hardly any meat.
 
.30-30 is plenty. Get a quality used Marlin 336 with a fixed 4 or low power variable scope, and you are all set. Ammo is MUCH cheaper than .45-70 unless you roll your own, and the .30-30 is much more enjoyable, or at least less-"lively" than the big thumper.

I had the chance to do that a couple of years ago in Honolulu with my bow.... man what a blast;)
 
AR in .450 bushmaster would be my first choice of rifles. If it is handguns I would take the Ruger SBH 44mag.
 
I use my 30-30 lever action and I always take my blackhawk chambered in .44 mag. I guess if you know that you are going to be faced with larger herds I would lean towards something in semi-auto.
