When, oh, WHEN will people learn to store their guns safely?

Thirteen is entirely old enough to know better than that, unless, of course, the lad is mentally retarded.
I have to agree - unless there's something unusual, a 13 year old should be in 8th grade. That is absolutely old enough to 1) recognize the difference between real and toy guns; 2) understand that you don't point real guns at people unless you HAVE to.

I see criminal culpability on the part of the 13 year old.

At 13 I could and did safely use, after much training and education from my parents:

1) Automobiles (on private land of course.)
2) Explosives (where legal.)
3) Rockets.
4) Chainsaws.
5) Firearms.
6) Nail Guns
7) Acetylene Torches.
8) 220VAC (and above in my expiriments/creations) wiring.
9) Impact tools.

I used all of the above tools responsibly and safely, and could be left alone with them for extended peroids of time (ie, a whole weekend.)

Ok, a 5 year old needs some hard access prevention, in addition to training on things like rubber-band guns, screw-drivers, and the like.

But once kids reach a 'certin age*', they can be trusted to a remarkable degree when afforded the respect and responsibility they have earned.

*This age is mental, not physical. I know some 11 year olds I'd hand an M-16 to, and some 43 year olds I'd keep away from STRING!

There’s no such thing as an accidental shooting. All shootings are either intentional or negligent.

An example of an accidental shooting would be a mechanical failure in a gun that caused it to fire and hit someone that the person carrying the weapon couldn't see.

Another example is someone running into the person holding the gun, and the gun striking the ground and drop firing. Most guns will not fire if dropped a reasonable distance. However if tossed with some force due to an unintential collision, it could happen.

Neither case is likely, however both are possible. Murphy's law pretty much dictates that given enough time circumstances will cause such a accident to happen.

modern definition of gun accident = "I pointed it at him and pulled the trigger and it went off." Well, duh.>>

there is no gun accidents only gun stupidity

if you have a gun in your house {loaded or unloaded} and you haven't taught everyone who lives in that house gun safety then you are commiting gun stupidity

if they have been taught gun safety and someone gets shot then they have commited gun stupidity

Kids will be kids but you also have to teach them and take away their curiosity factor by actuelly letting them handle and fire the your weapons in a controlled situtation. ie on a range...in the backyard

the only thing that I can even to begin that might qualify as a gun accident would be one of those stories most of us have heard I'm sure

"Dog shoots hunter":what:

the old dog gets the blame for stepping on hunters gun and it going off
personally I have heard several of these and got to wonder if maybe the hunter is not placing blame on innocent dog for his own stupidity:D

Agree, but can I bring up a pet peeve of mine?

Agreed. I should have said something like that in my post, but it didnt come to mind. Shameless plugs from sellers tick me off.
