I bought a Winchester '94 30-30 just before Christmas. I decided I wanted a lever, walked into a local gun shop and found one that had not been registered yet for $250 Canadian out the door. For the Americans that do not know of the wonderful gun laws of Canada is that as of Jan. 1, 2003 all firearms in Canada had to be registered and there was a $25 transfer fee each time one changes hands.
Anyway, this 30-30 has a serial number in the 4293XXX range, and I was wondering if someone knew how old this one might be. She has no rust on her, the blueing at the muzzle was a little worn but it touched up nicely. The reciever has this funny rainbow finish whan I use teflon based gun oils on it, could someone tell me what that might be? I think it might have been reblued, If so it turned out firly well overall. All I want the blueing to do on her is keep the rust of, not wow and dazzle the others at the range.
I put a Williams receiver sight on it, and commenced to shoot one inch groups with it at 50 yards. Not too shabby for someone who does not shoot past 20 yards without optics. I set up snowballs at that range twice the size of your fist and hit 4 of 5 by resting my elbow against a vetical post at the range. I admit it is not crack shooting, but I do not do much standing shooting often. This is the reason I bought her in the first place.
I am happy with it, but I would still like to know how old it is and what is up with the rainbow on the receiver. Thanks for any help I receive.
