I have heard that saigas are the best "ak type" (forgive me for that) rifles on the market the problem is they don't seem to be ON the market. It seems like everywhere I look Saiga rifles in either 7.62x39 or 5.45 are sold out.
Do you have one? In which caliber? Where can I pick one up? If not a Saiga is there an AK or an ak variant that comes close to what the saiga offers in terms of accuracy? I have heard that veprs are nice but expensive. Thoughts? thanks!

The real question is 7.62 or 5.45?

Check classicarms.us and impact arms. Or just go to google and punch in "Saiga 7.62x39 for sale" and you'll get a lot of links.

I have a 7.62x39 and will soon have a Saiga 12. I converted my x39, and have done another previously. They're the most accurate AK variant I've owned (about 1.5 - 2 MOA at 100yds from a bench with surplus ammo)

Be careful once you get one the others follow. currently my barn has the shotgun series 410, 20 and 12 and their friends the rifles 223, 545, 762x39 and 762x51. I have converted some and left some stock just depending on how I felt.
If you are wanting an AK47 then the 762x39 would be your choice and convert it back to what it is, an AK. The 545 is nice but some ranges don't let you shoot the cheap ammo so that might be a concern. With iron sights there is not enough difference in the two rounds to tell the difference. If you want to drop some optics on and reach out a bit the 545 will outperform the 762x39. Now is a great time to get into a Saiga with the prices being down. You don't have to convert the rifles but it helps. The 308 is the only exception, it has to be converted before it ever shoots a round. The trigger group is just awful and I usually don't care much about the trigger feel. The trigger slap in the 308 makes my finger hurt after just 20 rounds. With the conversion all is great, makes the 308 Saiga my favorite Saiga rifle to shoot.

if you want a true akm type style rifle still being imported to our shores, i would highly suggest the current offerings from the cugir factory the wasr 1063, this is built from the cugir factory which is a good thing, and the best part you own a true type akm without any mods. as for accuracy i think they woul be similar, as for the vepr you pay for a top notch quality type akm from the factory. prices were $850 ish, and now down to $679 and choices of 16-23" barrels.
