My g/f's step dad wants me to do a good cleaning on his Remington 870. Does anyone know where I can find a free,on line video on how to disassemble an 870?. I found one for my Mossberg 500,but hadn't had any luck on the 870.

Thanks,

Brian Craig

Thanks for the link Simon Yu;

STOP!

Step away from that 870.

Don't think you have to detail strip the trigger plate assembly just to clean the gun- if you take it apart in detail, you will most likely do permanent damage to the assembly.

It's enough to field strip the gun for cleaning, and instructions for that are in the owner's manual. If the owner doesn't still have the manual, it's online at Remington's web site- no video needed. http://www.remington.com/pdfs/om/om_870.pdf

Mr. Yu, sorry to say so, but you are NOT doing anyone (except gunsmiths) any favors by posting that link...

Just field strip it and clean and oil it. 870's should NOT be taken apart unless broken, which is rare. They are very reliable even if abused...ask me how I know.:evil:

Yeah,thats what I meant.I'm assuming field stripping an 870 is different than a mossy 500.I just want to know how to get it down to the receiver and blast it out and re-lube and assemble.

To clean mine I remove the barrel, to do that you unscrew the end of the magazine. When the end of the magazine tube is off, the barrel comes real easy after that, you can get into it easy. At least as much as you need to. You will see if you do it. Then you can push the thing in the receiver that looks like a CO2 canister forward a little and spray behind it. Thats all that I do and my 870's have all worked great...clean the barrel also. Thats it. They are a gem to maintain.

there really isn't a reason to detail strip the bolt or trigger assembly for a simple cleaning. remove the barrel, forend, trigger assembly, and bolt. clean the inside of the receiver, barrel, and bolt. that is generally sufficient. you can clean the inside of the mag tube if you want but usually that is only when a shell has come apart in the tube and the pellets or wadding are loose inside the mag tube. if you do clean the mag tube don't use any oil or solvent.

i am a Remington Armorer, BTW. trained in 2005 at the Remington Factory in Ilion, NY.

This happenrd to me;
Rem. 870 wingmaster 12Ga. 3"
Cold day duck hunting below zero(broke ice getting onto and off lake). We had a diver down. and swimming away fast. I tossed in a load for one last shot then it was pull anchor and get after it. Well when i shot the last load, I knowingly left the spent shell case in the chamber and cased the gun. we put the chase on but lost. Then upon anchoring and getting set up again i uncased, jacked out the spent case, put one into the open chamber, just as i always do(then two into the mag) when i closed the slide w/ butt on the floor of boat the gun whent off. It was right by my left ear. My son-in-law was looking my way and said "Wow you just about blew your head off" Upon looking the gun over, the saftey was still on, and the shell'sprimer was litely dimpled. at home upon reexamination, the gun was like all guns fresh from field, dirty but not grossly. I thought maybe the fireing pin seezed in the fired position by leaving it with the hammer/stricker in fireed position, but the pin would retract back into the bolt even with hammer down.

Never had anything like that happen again. But i don't carry a gun much anymore as the young grandchildren need watching.
