NYS is just like the rest of the country long gun wise, with the exception that they have a state AWB that is a mirror of the old federal one.

That single exception goes a long way toward making NYS a far cry from "just like the rest of the country." Many of the long guns in my collection would be illegal in that state in their current configuration. I have not made any of my guns "tacticool." Their current configurations are all their standard, original military configurations.

"Just curious, when shooting at a range in NY does LE look at when your magazines were made? I'd assume they'd have difficulty figuring out when an aluminum one was manufactured. The polymer magazines are much newer. "

Why risk a felony and possibly lose all gun owning rights. I often shoot at a quiet :) range in Livingston County, N.Y.
It is very rural but when I fire up my Colt M4 it gets ALOT of attention. I have been ask to see it several times as people
are curious how I own one. That M4 is was a very hard to get Colt that conforms to the AWB. That along with the 30 round
mags gets people looking.....add a full mag dump and you get the idea.

Sure I have to pay a premium for compliant stuff..........pennies on the dollar compared to a retainer fee for a firearms savy attorney.

Just isn't worth it!

Both are fun to shoot. Get caught with one of the two and you never get to shoot again. Our State Police are pretty savy and dating pre 94 mags is not all that difficult.

Yes, but it isn't CA, NJ, or even NYC for that matter, that have absolute mag capacity restrictions. In NY, you at least have the option of buying mags that hold greater than 10 rounds, albeit, they must be pre-1994.
