Just curious to where you keep your home defence weapon. Is it under bed or in shelf next to you ect..I curently have 5 rifles and a Jennings pistol that i will not shoot anymore because its unsafe..None of the rifles are loading and are in my closet ..Im getting some money in a few weeks and am thinking of picking up a .357 Or something..But have no idea where im gonna store it loaded.Do you guys just leave it there or take it out at night and put it back in the safe or whatever. Thanks just trying to get an idea.

My carry pistol goes on the shelf in the headboard of the bed and the Rem. 870 sits next to the bed. If I had kids this arrangement would change but right now this is what works for me.

I very strongly recommend a policy of a defence gun being either on your person, or at your bed in some way while you sleep, or locked away in secure storage (preferably a gun cabinet or safe). I observe this rule myself, and it removes all worry about anyone getting hold of the gun - even a casual thief who might break in while I'm out. In short - either the gun(s) is/are under my direct and immediate control and supervision, or they're locked away.

Half HD is my carry piece and that is rarely out of reach even at night. For that I recommend keeping it on floor just under edge of covers ... it does not show and yet if placed right .... is quickly accessible to a barely visible drop of my right arm .. the grips already oriented to enable a quick hold. I personally do NOT favor night stand one bit .. let alone in a drawer!!

Other half of HD is M66 which is sorta wife's HD gun. It resides in a closet, under a large pile of clothing .. only likely to be found by a very major piece of digging! But - very quickly accessible to me or wife.

I live alone, well I do have a cat, in a house with steel grills on the windows and doors. It's basicaly a "walk in" gun safe. I have several loaded handguns next to the head of the bed and a row of long guns against the wall by my bed. One is a Chinese Ithaca clone with a mag full of 00 Buck another is a Chinese Win '97 Trench Gun with a mag full of buck and a fixed bayonet. Then there are several rifles with fixed bayoents, including a FAL with a loaded 20 rnd mag.

If anyone tries to break in, the noise of them trying to get through the security steel will wake me and the cat up. I'll grab the FAL and the cat gets the trench gun and a mills bomb. I lay down a base of fire while he flanks the BG, tosses his grenade and then rushes in spraying buckshot and skewering any large pieces that are still moving. He scratches dirt over the remains and we celebrate with a big can of tuna and brewskies. :D :neener:

Ok the first paragraph is true, the second is just me being awake too long. :uhoh: :D

Behind a tapestry at the head of the bed. In the lower right hand desk drawer in the office. Inside the book case at the end of the couch. over the doorway between the house and garage. Holster mounted on desk here at pc. All go in the safe when I leave. ( I live alone.)

Under my immediate control or safely locked up. That's all the details I'll give.

One hint though, if you carry concealed, consider using your CCW piece as your home defense gun. Just keep the thing loaded 24/7. I'm convinced that reducing the amount of administrative loading and unloading significantly reduces the chance of an AD.

If your CCW gun is too small to use as a primary HD gun, consider it to be a loaded "back up" HD gun and find a way to safely secure it loaded when it is not on your person.

There is also something to be said for not immediately taking off your carry gun the instant you walk into the door of your home. If it's comfortable enough, why not just leave it on until you get ready for bed?

My beside the bed gun is aS&W 25-5(.45 colt)I keep that between the bed and my night table. It goes in the gun safe when I'm not home. I also have aS&W 640 which is stored in a place That is handy when I come in through the garage (its really well hidden and I have no kids so that is not a concern)

Within arms reach on a table. Next to a Surefire flashlight.

Something bout a 1911 on a nightstand that helps me sleep so soundly.

There's at least one gun in every room of the house, including the bath room and laundry room. That wasn't quite 157.839% intentional, you understand: they seem just to have dispersed themselves. Maybe they don't all get along.

XD 9 subcompact, Under my pillow, Loaded with no round in the chamber. It's easy enough to rack one in if needed.

I have a kid so when I'm ready for bed it comes out of the safe, when I wake up, back in it goes.

It does NO good to have it locked in the safe when an uninvited guest shows up in the middle of the night.:what: :what:

Man, I gotta teach my cat that stuff! Think he can handle the AR? :p

That was hilarious! :D

I keep my carry gun on my nightstand. I'm thinking about unlocking the safe at night so I'll have access to the AR, but I'm afraid of leaving it unlocked when I go out.

I keep a Legacy Escort 12ga cruiser ready w/ #8 Val-Pak. Buck and slugs on buttcuff.

It always stays next to the bed. My parents and sibling know not to mess with them, as I wouldnt mess with their stuff. The dogs however...well, they have the puppy force, or will cute the intruder to death, which is a horrible way to go.:scrutiny: (Long story)

Actually, I hadnt thought about a home invasion while I wasnt home. I really dont have any room for a cabinet anyway. even a 3 gun cabinet would take up too much space, as I dont have a foot of empty space.

I have 4 kids ranging from 15-2, so I have to take a few more precautions.

I keep my primary handgun in a lockable "pistol box" on my dresser. My EWS ( Early Warning System) consists of one fat Pembroke Welsh Corgi....no AWACS here. :D Keeping it there gives me enough time to clear my head prior to getting my weapon. It also keep it secure. There is nothing worse than getting to work and remembering you left your handgun on the dresser or under the mattress.

I keep a Romanian SAR1 AK with 2 30rd magazines ready to go in my safe for the "unthinkable".

GunVault (quick-access pushbutton combo) safe, in the armoire 2 steps from the bed.

The bedroom is on the 2nd floor at the end of the hall. The house has an alarm system.

Seriously, do you think that's too far away?

I'm with Preacherman and those who have agreed with him on this one. For your own safety your gun should be under your control or locked up. Even without kids around, what if someone breaks in quietly enough you don't wake up right away? If he/she finds your gun before you get to it your gun could be used against you. That isn't to say to be without a gun.

While at home and awake you can always keep a holstered weapon on your person. Also, while awake you can have another gun in a quick access safe (as well as keeping one or more there while you sleep) so it is both locked up (protects not only against children getting a hold of it, but protects you against a BG getting to your gun before you wake up) and easy to get to quickly if you need it. Keep it bolted to your bed or the wall near your bed so you don't even need to get up to get to your gun.

Also, since you say "home defense weapon" and not gun, then you can also do something I do. What if the BG gets in unnoticed as previously mentioned and you wake with him in your room? You don't want to go for the safe (or for the gun if you do keep it more open) and get the BG's attention. I keep a sheathed fixed blade knife in my bed with me. I move around enough in my sleep that I don't want a gun (I don't know exactly where it will end up and it may be in plain sight, thus opening up the problem of the BG stealthily getting your gun before you wake again) but the knife stays put where I keep it for one thing, and it is smaller and thus less noticable to the BG.

I have a piece of sheet metal 6" X12" bent at 90 degree angle in the middle. A holster for my commander is pop-riveted on it. It slides between the mattresses, this places the weapon at my hand under the covers without having to search under my pillow or scramble under the bed. Condition 3 when holstered. If children come to the house it is easily slid out and secured.

Being my wife and I live here alone and we have no grandkids or other kids coming around loaded guns are of no worry to us.

Consequently she has hers on her nightstand and I have mine along with a 12 guage 870 on my side of the bed.

We also have a 'loaded' in every other room in the house and one in the workshop.

My home defense gun, S&W 66, is hidden when not at home. It comes out in the evening and follows me around from room to room until bed time. My wife and I keep our bedroom door locked while sleeping and also have an alarm system. The 66 is conveniently placed on the floor next to the bed. I also have a S&W 640 and NAA Guardian close by for back up.

Since we now have a child in the house, I keep all my guns either on me (whew, that's heavy) or locked up. I don't even like leaving unloaded guns sitting out unless I'm in the room with them. She's only 4.5months old, but I'm trying to develop good habits now, while she's not likely to get into trouble.

That said, I keep the dedicated HD gun and my CCW in a locked box by the bed. It has a keylock and electronic combination with motion detector/alarm.

I keep a 6cell maglight by the bed for clubbing needs.

Everything else is down the hall in a gunsafe

Chris
