XD is the Croation built HS2000, like the Springfield P9 is an Italian built Tanfoglio. XD is a very good pistol. from what I have been told.

As for limits in modern gun design, things are slowing down but there's room for much improvement.
The FN FiveseveN for example is a pretty new polymer gun that uses a very nice pistol cartridge perfect made for highcap magazine.
The only recent US innovation I can think of is CALICO's helical drum design and the handguns. They're not as well built as European guns but the it is revolutionary.
