So I'm reaching the point where I need to seriously consider purchasing a heavy duty, floor standing gun safe. For those that have them, where in your house is yours located? A closet, office, bedroom, garage? In our house, it seems the best place would be the garage but I can't decide if that would be the best place to put it - any thoughts / comments are appreciated.

The garage is the last place you want it. If its easy for you to unload its easy for someone else to load.
I recomend a small enough room that leverage tools won't be useful and the confinement would be suffocating if a torch were used and carpet ect. was burning.
Anchor to the floor and wall if possible and 2 walls if in a corner.
If you are doing new construction build the room fire resistant and use expanded metal over the studs and double up on the sheetrock on at least 1 side. Be careful of basements if your area has any ground water problems.

Any place that is well hidden from sight and can be either bolted to the floor or through studs in the wall. When I built the building that houses my safe (I won't mention what the building is for security reasons) I put in 1x12 blocking between the studs of the room the safe was going to be located in so I would have more options as to where the safe would be mounted. I couldn't use the floor since I had radiant heating in the concrete foundation.

I put my 1000lb'er upstairs in the man cave. It wasn't easy for me and four furniture/appliance delivery guys to get it up the stairs and around the corners, even after taking the door off, but it is out of sight to anyone who doesn't get invited into the cave.

Garage??? Er, no... Have you ever forgot to leave your garage door open at night? I think some of us have...

I would not recommend the basement either. One failed sump pump and your investment is under water.

I would recommend somewhere hidden above ground level. If it is new construction, spend the money and have the space custom built. For an existing structure, somewhere out of the sight of visitors .

I have more than one. :D They are located in closets, bedrooms, and the den. I do not like the idea of having one in the garage as it is to easy to access. The basements where I live always flood, so I don't have one. I do agree with secureing the safe every way available. If the floor is concrete use Hilti brand bolts. For wood stud walls and floors use the heavyest ancor that you can. You may want to put the safe in a location and test it out before you secure it though. I have one that is near imposible to open all the way:banghead::cuss: Also if you purchase a verylarge safe and the floor is wood you may want to find a way to support the floor so the safe will not do damage to your home.

Wouldn't you like to know... :)

I prefer a closet located centerally in the house.

Which one? ;)

A basic rule of safe (RSC) placement is to conceal the presence of the safe itself. That can mean buying RSCs that look like other things, or placing them outside of common areas. They should also be placed someplace that is reasonably climate controlled and in a place that allows them to be bolted to the structure.

i salvaged an old candy machine--its by the pool table

Cx's is for colts; Hx's for high powers; etc

the $1.00 each to get the guns out goes to buy ammo:D:D

In one of the corners of the spare bedrooms situated up against a wall parallel to the entry door so even if the door is open you cant see it unless you walk into the room.
I have no issues with anyone tryng to conceal their gun safe but if it has any size to it at all it's not going to be that concealeble unless it is disguised as something else.
Each and every time my home was broken into every closet was always looked into and ransacked.
So,buy the best you can afford, bolt it down, and try to harden the home as best you can.

Thanks guys - that's what I figured (about the garage anyway) - even if bolted to the floor it would be very convenient to drive a truck up and rip it out if they wanted it bad enough. I guess I'll just have to work on my speech to sweet talk my wife into letting me put it in the closet :D

safes

I have a few, three are in the house, office, den, bedroom, one is in the garage, and two in the shop out back.
All have sensitve tabs, that when moved set off alarm. If they get into the house, between the silent alarm and the six dogs, they are welcome to try and move them, break into them.
But as always a very good determined thief will or can be successful, one can only hope to deter them long enough for them to be caught or give up for fear of being caught for too much time involved.
good luck with it.

I would wory more about condensation from extreme temperature changes in the garage than somone stealing it.

one in my business office , one in a spare bedroom , one at my brothers house in a bedroom
all bolted to the floor, all in air conditioning. No way I would keep a safe in the garage in the swamp here.

Who cares? It is your house! Put it in the living room and mount a TV on top! If someone is in YOUR house who isnt supposed to be, than they should be leaving feet first.

Had mine bolted down in the bottom floor of the boat, the bolted down boat went down too!
beat me to it...

have any windows in your house, or live in a bunker?

b/c if you have any windows that anyone can look in while you aren't home and SEE a safe, that would probably be a good indication to them that there is something worth stealing in it.

To the OP, if I had one it would go in our walk-out basement, bolted to the floor and wall, and concealed in some manner (I considered building a cabinet around it). Basement has a de-humidifier running 24/7, and flooding risk is minimal sans a busted water pipe, and I try to turn the water valve off when we go on trips. The rest of the time someone is home.

I've got mine in the garage, but then again its never had a car in it since I moved in, it is my workshop/mancave, when the garage door is open all you see is a small shop with all the power tools everywhere, I installed wall cabinets with my safe hidden inside one of them, if you didn't know I had one you wouldn't suspect it, also my garage door is manual and I have it set up so that it's as secure as if it was a wall when closed, living in AZ I don't have to worry about humidity, so a garage will work if you have it set up properly.

I have a small house with limited closet space so mine is bolted to the floor by my side of the bed right next to my head.
