I am looking to get my first revolver after several semi-automatics. The purpose will be primarily (in order) ...

1. range
2. bed stand (i.e. house gun)
3. carry

What do you suggest I consider?

4" S&W 19/66 or 586/686
4" Ruger GP100 series

either one of the above will do all you need. The S&W's have a little nicer trigger and cost a little more, and the Rugers are great workhorses.

The guns that are best at 1 and 2 are nowhere near best for 3. You'd do much better to get one for purposes 1 and 2 without worrying about 3 at this point, and get a carry wheelgun later, when you've (learned to shoot a revolver and) decided that's what you want to do.

The suggestions above (Brian's) are completely correct for range & HD guns. If possible, handle 4 and 6 inch guns to see what feels best to you. Actually, if I was in your shoes right now, I'd look for this gun:

A five-inch, half-lugged, 7 shot S&W 357. I'd bet a bunch of money you'd love it.

If you later decide you want a carry wheel--or if that's really a more important part of the equation than the order of your list suggests--then I'd try to handle some 2.5 or 3" K-frames, like S&W's 65 or 66.

If you're buying new look at a K frame S&W or Tuarus. If you're looking at used guns then a K frame S&W or a Ruger Security is your best bet for a carry gun. I have a Ruger GP100 and an N frame S&W in .357 that are great range guns. They're okay to pack around for a couple of hours but the start to get heavy in a hurry. For a packing pistol while i'm hunting of fishing i always carry the Security Six.

S&W 686, 7 shot

Gotta agree with Christopher........ This piece is great for range, target, hunting, HD and makes a fine car gun. The 7 shot capacity competes with a lot of autos, but has none of the hassles of safeties, and decokers and making sure you've put one in the stove pipe..... just point and shoot. Smith also makes lightweight 7 shot snubbies too.

I have a 4" 686 and it's great. It's big enough to be comfortable, but not too big to carry. I love to shoot it, and so far, any .357 i've put thru it has been a blast to shoot (literally...) :D

I would get the Ruger SP-101. Their longer barrel, stainless steel, adjustable sights and 357 Magnum/38 Special. Speedloaders and Crimson Trace grips would finish it off.
