Which .22 handgun would you buy of these two?

The Colt.

I have a Hi Standard Supermatic left to me by my father. It would be great to shoot the two side by side. But mostly I think that Colt might be harder to find than a S&W .22 revolver.

The Woodsman.

They are getting much harder to come by in that shape then the S&W of lessor condition.

Do you have to choose? Can't you give up groceries for a month and buy both?

If I had to choose, it would be the Woodsman, even though I already have a Huntsman. Or maybe BECAUSE I already have a Huntsman :)

Get the S&W model 41 or the revolver. The 41s are exquisitely accurate and the revolvers are getting rare in that model.

Colt

I'd say the Colt, just because it appears to be, and seems to be in better condition (near mint?).

The Smith you may be able to buy almost anytime (you also state it has a lot of "blems"), that Colt, though I don't know about, you may not get another one that good so easily.

How do the screw heads look on the Smith? Do they look like they've been removed a number of times with the wrong-size screwdriver?

The S&W Model 18 - I bought one in the mid-'60s and
though I sold it to a good friend, I regret selling it and
would like to have another.

Both!

As much as a enjoy my Model 17 (basically a 6" Model 18), I might lean more towards the Woodsman; as others have said, they are getting rarer, even more so than the Model 18. As I said, get both if at all possible.

As for which will burn ammo faster, it depends. If you preload all the mags, then the Woodsman wins out. But if you are going through a couple hundred rounds, the revolver will win be faster as you don't a magazine that is slow to reload.

If it was me I'd get the revolver since I already have two like new Woodman 4" Target sport's however If I had neither of the two I'd see if I could manage both. If I could only have one it would be the Colt.

I'[d go with the Smith. .22 revolvers are great for breaking in newbies and make ammo last longer.

I'd go with a MkII or MkIII Ruger before the Colt. Maazines and parts are cheaper and more plentiful, Ruger will fix any problems down the road, and you can order one just like you want (assuming the colt isn't just what you want).

Colt Woodsman. I own one (1949 Second series) and it just can't be beat...

Mine is exactly like the one you posted except with a 6" barrel.

I'm firmly in the "BOTH!!!" crowd - you really can't have too many .22 pistols. :)

If only one, I'd get the Colt first (and try to put the S&W on lay-away).

Humm.....Ichiro, posted an interesting statment;
"Revolvers don't waste 22 ammo fast enough"
Well not sure about that one as it would make an interesting test. Take one DA .22 cal revolver (don't matter 6-10 rd.cylinder) and take any auto-loader pistol with one standard 10 rd. clip (pre-loaded). Give a specified time limit, like 1 to 3 min. At the go siginal proceed to shoot as many rounds possable within the time limit, reloading when nessary. I would think the revolver would beat the auto-loader as after the first clip you would be losing to more time reloading the magazine, than reloading the revolver. It would be an interesting test. LM

The Model 18. You might look for a year for another one; probably not the case with the Colt. My advice is to buy both of them along with the Smith Model 41 you mentioned earlier.

While I am a huge S&W fan, I would buy the Colt in this instance. The Colt Woodsman is a great semi-auto pistol that I wish was still in production. If you purchase the Colt, you will not regret it. Go for it!
