OK, so you live in CA and have a ccw that only allows 3 guns on the permit. CA isn't a state that allows loaded carry in a vehicle without a ccw, so you can't have a loaded truck gun without it being on your permit.

I've wrestled with this because 3 is pretty limiting for me. I wish it were 4 or 5.

What 3 guns or types of guns would you put on your permit and why?

Probably a medium-size semi-auto, a small BUG-type handgun like a five-shot revolver or Rohrbaugh, and a shotgun (assuming you ever travel with a loaded shotgun.)

I should have specified handguns. Long guns aren't put on ccw's and except for cetain hunting situ's, you can't carry one in a vehicle. I'm talking about all your carry needs. CA is, however pretyy good about modifying your permit to add or remove handguns, but again, you can only have 3 at any given time.

I try to list my 3 most used handguns. I've had a CA ccw for about 9 years. Right now I have a Colt 80 Series, Glock G26 and a Buckmark 22 on my permit. I'd like to put my Jframe on the permit, but would have to remove one of the others.

Ooops, I should clarify the long gun issue. You can have an unloaded unconcealed long gun in a vehicle.

I live in CA and I have a CCW.

1. Kimber Pro CDP; daily carry when in civilian clothes, aka, when I can wear a holster.
2. Kahr P9; daily carry when traveling between work/home in uniform, aka, when I can't wear a holster. I also have a holster set up for this when I require a bit more concealment (not often).
3. Kel-Tec P11; backup in case one of the primaries go down.

I have a little S&W Mod 60 that would fit the bill also.

"Slightly off topic, what was your reason for needing a CCW permit?"

I assume you mean my good cause statement.

I had two; 1. I travel at odd hours to places not necessarily of my choice and carry cash for my business. 2. My ex wife and her new scumbag druggie friends had made threats against me.

I'm in Kern county and the sherriff here is pretty liberal about handing out ccw's. It's nearly "shall issue" here. I've seen some pretty slim good cause statements here and pretty rarely anybody is turned down.

Where in CA do you live?

If it were me I'd drop the Buckmark and add the j-frame. It's always good to have a pocket gun available should the need arise. My personal carry guns are a Springfield Mil-Spec, Glock 19 and a S&W 642, that seems to cover most situations pretty well (though a .380 PPK will be added to the rotation soon as well).

Currently I only have my Sig P6(P225) listed on my permit. I'm planning on adding my second Sig, P6, but need to transfer it into my name. I'm thinking of picking up either a subcompact 9mm semi, or a small S&W revolver.

The California CCW only has 3 lines for weapons, but, depending on the sheriff, you may be able to have more. I just got mine, and when I took the class, one of the other guys ended up with 5 or 6 guns listed.

If you don't frequent it, you might want to check out http://www.californiaccw.org/

BTW - I'm in Fresno. I was worried about my good cause statement, but it turned out to be pretty easy to get my CCW here.

I don't like the law for the sake of limiting your rights, but I do think that you limiting how many different weapons you carry for CCW might be a good thing. YOu're gonna use it is a highly stressful situation, and you should be very accustomed to the feel, weight, and operation of that particular firearm. If you're switching between 4 or 5 weapons, your mind may hesitate in trying to perform a function with it since it feels slightly different.

My Colt and my Glock are my 2 main carry guns depending on location and dress. The Glock sees more summer use. I keep my Buckmark on the permit because I hunt a lot with my truck or Jeep and I don't like having to load and unload it every time I get in and out of the vehicle. I'd like to keep a big bore handgun in my vehicle.

In my county; you can have two. They are model specific & serial # specific. NO single action ie:1911a.

As in all things in life, there are exceptions.

Not necessarily true. There are only 3 lines on the permit, but you can list more than 3 guns.. Notice at the bottom of page five where it says, "Use Additonal Pages if Necessary"

http://www.sdsheriff.net/mgt_serv/licensing/ccw_app.pdf

Someone over at calguns.net got a copy of Sylvester Stallone's application and he had like 8 guns listed. 3 were written in the space provided and the rest were scrawled on the back :)

To answer the question though, I guess I'd list a Sig Sauer P220R, a Springfield Armory Loaded MC Operator, and a Springfield Armory XD-9 :)

It seems to be a county by county issue. I've asked my county specifically if I could list more than 3 and was told no. My permit is up for renewal again in Jan. I'll ask again. I could be happy with just one more. BTW, I just took my CA permit out and looked closely. It does not say "Use Additional Pages if Necessary."

Glock 19 (if you have highcaps) If no highcaps an officer size 1911
Smith 642 .38spcl for pocket carry/bug
Glock 26, 10+1cap, 9mm, good compact carry gun.

I live in CA in LA ans it's nearly impossible to get a permit good cause or not. I just got back from Vegas where as oc Oct. 1 I can carry with my Utah Permit. I carried my Glock 26, S&W 642 & 442 and Kimber Ultra Raptor. The same I would choose if I were in CA.

I only have 2 on mine currently, a fullsize and a compact.

1) Kimber Series I Royal fullsize 1911
2) HK P2000

I'm still in the process of finding a suitable pocket carry gun but so far no luck. Ideally I'd love to put a PM9 as the last one, but the mix of positive and negative reports holds me off. Plus, the polymer Kahrs leaves a lot to be desired in terms of fit and finish for $600.

Black Majik

I have the PM9. I replaced it on my permit with a G26 which is a little larger and holds 10+1. The PM9 has been reliable with the 6 round mags, but I've had feed problems with the 7 rnd mags. Don't know why. I think I'd put my Airweight J-Frame on my permit if I could. I'll probably sell the PM9.

gbran,

Thanks for the reply. Bummer to hear it wont feed with the 7 round magazines. If I was to use a PM9 for pocket carry, I most like would have used the 6 round mags.... and possibly the 7 rounders for spares. As much as a PM9 would be perfect for me, my reservations about the pistol keeps me from buying one. I know the only way to overcome this would be to just go out and purchase one and hope that it works well.

I recently purchased a S&W M36-7 for considerations of pocket carry and occasional range fun, but it was too heavy to tote around in a pocket. I usually wear jeans and my pockets aren't deep so they were noticeably heavy to me. I thought about an airweight snubbie also, but most of the ones I looked at felt pretty cheap to me also.

Then there's KelTec, which Californians here ask for $500+ for a $250 gun. Yikes.

My search for a pocket carry continues...
