Which 308-243-6.5 AR would you buy

Quick range summary for the MP 10. First with a quick cleaning. I figure since the designers obviously went light with this 18" barrel I would stick with the theme and put my lightest appropriate optics combo on there consisting of a 2-7X33 scope and aluminum rings. This also happens to be the only optics combo I have, so there is that. This optic combo is lighter than many scopes by themselves let alone the mount. So it is a light and straightforward package. Also put on a CTR stock. Lucky to find I had a black one sitting around. Tried two types of ammo. PMC 168 OTM Match went into a 1.4" three shot group at 100 yds. Not bad, until Federal Gold Medal Match 168 gr. went into a 1" group with two shots almost touching. This from an overweight crosseyed shooter with a 7 power scope. After final adjustments, shot some steel out to 250 yds. No misses. Just point and send it. This rifle is sweet. It piled up the brass in a neat little pile for me. Really could not be happier.

I was dissatisfied with the selection of .243s available, so I built one. (1/8 barrel from X-Caliber.)

I ran out of use for .308. I found a few boxes of premium hunting ammo from at least 15 years ago. I had to go through my entire friend list to find anyone who still uses it to give it away. I would rather build more uppers in 6.5 CM and/or 7mm/08 than doodle around with .308 anymore.

How do you like the X-caliber barrel? Where did you buy it from?
Was readily available or was it a special order?
I have a .308 upper that I could convert to .243, but most barrels available are 1:10 twist. Recently found .243 brass and my bolt gun is 1:9.25 twist. Too slow for a 105Gr. bullet on inventory.

I ordered mine straight from X-Caliber. They have you fill out the specs, profile, ROT, etc. I went with 1/8 specifically to run heavier bullets.

9.1 before or after optic?

I have an 18” PSA10 and it weighs just over 8 lbs out of the box. Picked it up last year for $800. It’s phenomenally accurate, and I’m very pleased with it, but with optic and all it’s heavy, as most AR-10s are. If I were in the market today I’d be looking very hard at the Ruger SFAR.

I actually tried to put my LaRue trigger in there first, but it did not install easily. I think if I were willing to remove the safety selector then the LaRue would have gone in. The Geissele trigger unit fit without removing the safety.

I own several LaRue MBTs and every one of them required removing the selector to install. No big deal for what’s the best trigger for the money, IMO.

unless one wants to resize 6.5 Grendel brass.
It is pretty easy and a good choice for someone to try as their first resizing effort, but I also have a lot of Grendel brass as well as 6mm projectiles from other chamberings.

As far as OPs question, I think the 6.5 CR is the most versatile. I have put together a couple dozen large frame ARs from 22 to 35 caliber. An 18" .308 Win and a 20" 6.5 CR are the most popular ones that my friends/family enjoy shooting. They like that they can ring steel out to 1200 yards with the 6.5 and 800-900 with the .308 pretty easily.

They can be a tad heavy to carry all day hunting, so I have a lighter weight 16" .308 AR for that. I am intrigued by the SFAR but hesitant to get something with such proprietary components since I always roll my own ARs. But if you aren't going to be putting it together yourself I'd look hard at the SFAR. Best of luck.

SFAR 16" is what I'm after. I finally have almost enough Cabelas points to buy so I've been checking daily. They notified me by email it was back in stock but by the time I got to the site they were out again.

The 20" was available on the site for almost a week, but the 16" doesn't last long in stock. I'm also thinking it will get a suppressor in time so I want the short barrel. If I was not going to suppress, I'd go with 20" model.

Well, the 16” showed up on the Cabelas website this afternoon and I locked one in. Now I have to save up for a scope but used $1000 Cabelas points so my out of pocket cost was a bit over $150 after tax and 5% military discount.

My most accurate rifles are both 6.5 Creedmoor, one is JP Enterprise 22” barrel, bolt & crrier, captured buffer on Sharps Jack receiver set, Giselle trigger, PRS stock, Atlas bipod, Leupold 8-25x50

Second is my SiG SSG shown here with the original 308 barrel and the 6.5 Creedmoor with a black stainless fluted Bartlein barrel.
