Im not sure what catagory to place this under but I guess factory ammo falls into acssesories.

Anyway Whay brand of self defense ammo do you prefer out of the following Winchester ranger t series, federal HST, Federal Hydroshok, Speer gold dot, Hornady XTP or other. I prefer winchester ranger myself but I figured id take another look at ammo selection and see what you guys have to say.

I generally like the Buffalo Bore stuff, in no small part because they list their velocities from various barrel lengths (standard pressure 38 spl velocities are meaningless to me if measured from a 6-8" barrel, and since the wifey "borrowed" my Kel Tec, I almost exclusively carry my old 49). The Kel Tec is the only exception, which is kept full of white box JTC's.

I've never been a fan of the Hydra-shock because of all the goofy hype over the useless center post. Cutting out the post does nothing to change the expansion characteristics of the round and it's nothing but a marketing ploy for the masses who don't know any better. Having said that, my 40 is currently loaded with Hydra-shocks simply because it's the only premium defense round I have in that caliber. My preference runs to the Winchester Ranger T-series but, the reality is, there isn't a whole lot lot difference in the performance of modern defense rounds from any credible manufacture. The only one I strictly avoid is the Winchester Silver-Tip in .44 Special as I found it to be so lightly loaded it barely made 700 fps on my chronograph.

Federal HST followed closely by Winchester Ranger T. With regard to the latter, I'm not buying ANY Winchester ammo at this time due to their long-running QC issues.

Hornady

So far I am the only one to pick Hornady, but everybody gets to pick what they like. I don't have anything bad to say about any of the ones you listed, but when I do buy ammo (usually reload) it always seems that Hornady gets my money.

I voted "other"..my carry 357's have Barnes XPB's in them ( 140grn in my 4in Service six and 125grn in my DAO 2.25 sp101) my .40 3.8 XDm has 155grn Gold Dot (handloads) and my 1911 has Remington 230hp's (handloads) Those are for SD. All my hunting hp's are Hornady XTP,357,454 300grn mag (45 Colt) all handloads.

I use Speer Gold Dots the most, followed by Hornady TAP (XTP). Hornady is very very accurate and gives you more penetration than most hollow points.

for factory stuff i prefer gold dots. for my reloads though, i prefer the hornady XTP as they are some of the most accurate loads i have shot through my pistol.

I like the T-Series in most of my common calibres. .45, .40, and 9mm. I don't like loading +P and .40 for carry. Don't like pushing the envelope with high pressure rounds (save one).

For the 10mm, I load them all. I prefer the XTP in this one, it comes in weights up to 200gr. and is SOOO accurate!

For practice ammo , I reload, but for defense ammo...

I use different makes for different guns. In my 9mm guns , I like Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P and in my 38 special Ruger LCR I use the Speer GD 135 gr. In my pocket 380, I use 102gr Remington Golden Saber. In my Colt Magnum carry 6 shot 357 mag, I use Hornady Critical defense 125gr.

I reload all my ammo and for SDA I use hornady xtp bullets.
Winchester primmers and brass.
Have not bought factory ammo for almost 30 years. Shotgun I have to buy as I do not reload for scatter guns.

I prefer speer gold dot, but more important than that to me is what is locally available. Yes I buy online sometimes, but I want whatever I buy online to ALSO be locally available.

Depends on the caliber.
Winchester, Hornady, Federal, Corbon, Magsafe.

What brand of AMMO= HST
what brand of BULLET=XTP, that is untill they make a 10mm HST round

Hornady loads most of their handgun stuff a bit light for my taste.

Depends on the gun....

My 2 .357 Rugers like the Speer 158-Gr "Gold Dot"

My .45's like the Rem 230-Gr "Golden Sabre"

My cheapy DA .38-Spl is best with the Federal 110-Gr "Personal Defense" (NOT the +p stuff)

I don't know. They are using what looks like Montana Gold bullets in their
125 gr 357 load. I don't know about this bullet for SD.

The best factory ammo i've ever fired was made right on the CO-AX press in the pict.,

And as i had an ammo mfg. license when i made it, i can pick "other" on your post and still be on topic. lol
