Which brand of primer do you use most and why?

I use CCI because a friend recommended them and they have worked 100%for me.

I have also used a few Federal and Winchester. They all went bang reliably.

I can't tell any difference between brands but often read that some are "harder" than others, affecting reliability with guns with lighter hammer or striker strikes.

I use Winchester and CCI. That's what's mostly available in my area and I've never had a problem with either one. I only reload for handguns so can't comment on rifle primers.

Winchester.

Shotshell Reloader here...

I once came in with 25K Win Primers. Wifey at the time made a comment about how "many" they were, and how long they would last, storage...etc.

*tick...tock*

"Honey, what do you mean you are going to get some more Primers?"

I was down to 5K, I showed her the storage area of reloaded shells...which meant she saw the boxes of empty hulls..."

I cannot type what she exclaimed. Lets just say she was quite overwhelmed.

Then a buddy let slip I had ~ 10K reloaded shells in his warehouse stored...

Got rid of the wifey, kept the guns and ammo. :D

She never forgot I used Win primers for some reason...

CCI all the way. I've loaded thousands and thousands of rounds with them and never had a single primer failure. They're fantastic.

I favor Federal - certainly way back when reloading, the CCI's came out as demonstrably harder - so for a compo revo for example, with spring eased off a bit - enough so that some would not go.

I also use Win sometimes but still stick to Fed mostly. This BTW is re handgun loads - for rifles and large cal handguns - I am much less fussy and CCI will do fine too.

Fed 150's are used loading the 45acp and auto rim.
CCI BR2's are used loading the 308 with Varget, a match maid in heaven:D
Rem 7.5's are used loading the 223 with Varget, a true love affiar!:p
I tend to use CCI 450's with TAC.;)

CCI almost exclusively, with some Winchester (at this point I only reload pistol). No problems in Sig, Glock, Browning or Ruger.

Winchester feed the easiest through my 650 but federal have been more reliable. I am now mainly using federal

Ditto Jeeper. Winchester seem to be the most consistent in cup size and feed flawlessly in my presses. Federal primers also feed well and seem to make a little more consistent ammo. I hate CCI primers, the military primers they make are used in my military style semi's but I will never seat another standard CCI primer if I can help it.

I had a friend go to Perry this summer and sent some money with him, I laid in a PILE of Winchester primers at a fantastic price. I also have a bit of a stockpile of Federals too. If it weren't for the smoking deal on Winchester primers I would have switched over to Federal almost exclusively.

Winchester - 0 problems in 1000's of rounds.

I've tried Federal but they tend to flip upside down when using my Lee 4 hole turret so I stopped using them.

I've got some CCI's that I've never used for some reason - will have to give them a shot  sometime...

Winchester

because they work, and because they are about the only kind I can find around here...

about 60% federal, 30% cci, and 10% everything else combined.

i am trying to get everything weaned off the other 10% so i can go 60-40 fed/cci, and not have to have so many different kinds on hand.

It appears I've purchased stock in Federal...

Specifically, the 210 Match Large Rifle primers.

Although I have a bunch of the CCI #34 primers for my 7.62x39 handloads, too. ;)

(11 to go, then I go...)

...the 650 and Federal primers seem to have tube detonations...

I've read where the 650 and Federal primers seem to have tube detonations more often then Winchester primers. So I use Winchester for my autos and Federal only for my round guns.

Respectfully,

FWIW...

a saw an article somewhere that just changing primer brands could vary pressure in a rifle by 6,000 psi. Some brands arre "hotter" than others. IIRC, CCI's were the hottest, then Winchester, Federal, and Remington

I use Winchester for pistol because I can use them in everything and they seat easily in my Dillon. I have a lot more trouble with CCI's seating and also have about 1 in 5 misfires with my Thompson Contender due to the hard material of the CCI's combined with the light hammer strike. Federal works fine.
