You know, I have a Cougar in .40 S&W, and my one gripe with this gun is the checkering sucks. I have a really hard time hanging on to that little gun. The vertical serations do nothing to enhance your grip. I shoot a 5" bbl S&W 460 Magnum, and have better control with that gun. I know there are a lot of complaints about the .40 S&W cartridge being snappy, and I guess I agree. I just really like the looks of the gun.
Also, the finish is not really wearing as well as I'd like, but then again, it is a $400 gun, so what do you want right? I'm considering getting rid of it, in favor of picking up a FNX-40. I've handled them and love the grip angle and the checkering on the polymer grip. I think it will help me control that cartridge better, but the gun is 5 oz lighter than the Cougar. So now I'm worried it's really just the .40 that I don't care for, and am going to buy another pistol I don't like to shoot. Maybe I should switch to a 9mm or a .45 ACP.
I have both of these guns in 40SW, as well as a Glock 27. The most pleasant and most accurate in my hands is the FNX. The bore axis is really low, and it just doesn't have as much sting as the G27. I don't even notice it until I've put lots of rounds downrange. The Cougar recoil is mild, to be sure, but the muzzle rocks up/down a lot more.I personally doubt that the FN will be any better. I'm a 40 S&W junkie - I've got several of various makes. The Cougars rotating barrel and alloy frame absorb a good deal of the 40's "snappiness". A polymer gun with a conventional lock will only snap and kick more than your cougar.
Not for me. The only reason I shoot so much 9mm is due to cost, and I have only 1 9mm handgun. Actually, I can't tell a whole lot of difference between shooting my G19 and my FNX40, and I shoot max loads 95% of the time in my 40's. The G27, OTOH, does get my attention.but once you switch to a 9 or 45, then go back to the 40, you're like damn this caliber sucks.
