Kershaw's are decent looking knives, but frankly rarely use very good steel--AUS-8 is about as good as it gets, and there are better steels you can get for the same money. They also tend to mostly use liner locks, and again, this isn't the most desirable locking mechanism. Have one close on you once and take a finger half off, and you'll never trust another liner lock.

I'm not familiar with that particular model of cold steel without looking, but it would depend on the model if the cold steel is preferable. It is likely that at the least the cold steel uses a traditional lockback design, which to me would be preferable, and it is also likely that at the least it has AUS-8. If it has their old carbon v or whatever it was called, that's definitely a better steel IMO.

If the CS turns out to just have the AUS-8, which is an unfortunate direction they seem to have headed in, then in all honesty I'd look for something different than either. Go for a traditional lockback or something like an axis lock from benchmade.

Many thanks for the reply's so far; lets keep um coming~! :D

Probably a dumb question, but just how does one tell what kind'a steel
these knife maker's use? And yes, the Cold Steel Voyager MC-29 is a
traditional lockblade design; and very light in weight as it has a Zytel
handle.

If you look around at the dealers who sell them they will many times have all the specs and steel type in the description. The CS knives here are made from AUS-8.

I'm not that knowledgable on steels, but I wouldn't get either one frankly. I'd get at least 440C. And if it says "440" it's not C. :)

Hey Guy's-

Just wanted too share this with you. I have purchased the Kershaw
Ken Onion Leek 1660BB, and the Cold Steel Voyager MC-29 as I'm
equally impressed with both. I was going to use one (or the other)
in everyday business (opening sealed firearms boxes); but I like both
so much I think I will buy me one of those razor blade knives instead.

Go ahead and use them for work! Switch back and forth if you want to get a little more time in between sharpening. You'll learn more about them and what good and bad qualities they have by using them, and can use that to help pick your next one.
Or if they end up being exactly what you want then you get to enjoy using them. Thats what quality tools are for, you shouldn't have to worry about messing them up anytime soon :D

I love the leek. So much so I had to have the "rainbow" leek when it came out at the '03 shot show. Got to hang out with Ken Onion, Darryl Ralph and a bunch of the other great knifemakers. Ken gave me one of the prototypes of the leek right from his pocket. Going to the Harris Publications afterparty was cool too.....:D

My pics suck, but its a gorgeous knife.

I have both, sort of..

I recently bought the Voyager (with the 3.5" blade), wanted that tanto point, and I have carried the smaller Kershaw "Scallion" for about a year. I don't know much about steel or knives, but the Kershaw can be honed quickly to a really sharp edge, and the Voyager seems impossible to hone at all. (The voyager had the lead edge dulled by "shoppers& droppers" and I think i'll have to send it to Cold Steel to re-edge.)
I'll carry the Keshaw to open them nasty old boxes - besides the opening and closing on it is so much easier than the CS. I wasn't sure I'd like the bolster lock, but after a while it's as easy as any lock to deal with. The blade is sharp all the time, so don't touch it....:)

I like SOGs in general. I have a couple fixed blades (Seal 2000 and Seal Pup) and the SOG Trident as a folder. It's an assisted opener which is kind of nice.

440A is not as good at edge holding as AUS8, but it is easier to sharpen. If you know how to sharpen you'll probably be fine with either.
