For the money, Spyderco. Excellent steel is delivered by giving you cheap handle materials and generic yet functional locks. A spyderco Native II has been my daily knife for quite some time. Have driven more than a few plastic Spidies in the ground.
Benchmade, had a Emerson designed CQC, good knife.
Carry also a Buck Strider, good knife. Blade geometry of a brick chisel. Near sailor-proof. Won't shave with this one, but pokes really big holes in stuff.
If I had the money for the "best" it would be Pat & Wes Crawford. Haven't seen a Chris Reeves, I'm sure they're nice.
