Who doesn’t own/like AR’s?

Several have come and gone. Easier to put together than a carburetor. Build is an exaggeration. I kept one because Hillary said she was going to take them away. Bring it. Just something nifty to have like all the others. Now M1 Garands are way cooler.

I do not own one and have no interest in owning one. Different tastes. Mine are all related to Long Range or very short range (10') There is nothing here in my neighborhood that would be suited to hunting with a Semi-Auto. Too crowded to hunt yot'es and we don't have any wild pigs yet. Then when hell hits the high water mark I figure there will be more than plenty of them laying about that I could just pick one out of dead hands.

The other day while working as RO on a 25yd range I had a customer spend 2.5hrs shooting his AR at a single target just 15yds away. Don't know what his intention was but I was not impressed with his target. I hold better groups with my 45ACP.
Or someone will shoot you in the butt and take your good gun and ammo

I have owned 3 (iirc) and I currently own one complete lower, a buddy of mine bought the upper for way more than it was worth in one the panics and I’ve just never replaced it.

I've tried to like them but they’re just not my cup of tea. Nothing against them, I’m just in a position where I have a better gun for every situation. No matter what I’m doing I’ll reach past the AR and get a different (better suited) gun out of my safe. I do have other gripes but they’re subjective, so why bother?

They are the “jack of all trades, master of none” to me. If I could only have a rifle or two maybe I’d use it.

I do think they’d be good coyote guns, small caliber, quick follow up shots, compact. I keep saying I’m gonna get an upper for my lower and have a dedicated coyote gun, right now I just use a 270, which is effective. lol

I am a fan of classic in most things. Rifles, handguns, shotguns, cars, trucks, houses, knives… but I have found a hole where the AR fits. I don’t like them, but I do have a couple because they have potential to do some really good things.

My carbine is pretty basic. Freefloat handguard, linear comp, and sig Romeo on top, and that is the full list of non-standard stuff. The gun can deer hunt anywhere that 223 is legal. It’s plenty accurate for hunting out to a hundred yards and at that point it’s kinda limited by the dot. Can’t beat it for fast follow-ups on coyote or similar, and just the same couldn’t beat it for followup down the hallway if there were an intruder. Simple is effective.

My big AR is a 6.8spc. 22” heavy free float with a 3x9x50 on it and it shoots TIGHT groups to 600 which is as far as I have shot it. It’s dropping pretty fast at that point so realistically it’s about done anyway. Again, simple is effective, and for deer it is plenty accurate and powerful. I would stop at whitetail, but I killed a doe this year with it and I was satisfied with the gun, less satisfied with the ammo, but it got meat to the freezer.

They are black, modern, and are kinda ugly, but they just flat work. I don’t like them as anything but a tool, but just like a good crescent wrench it is good for what it does, and if needed it can be adjusted to fit other tasks. Best tool for the job, nope, but an effective tool for many jobs with a little adjustment. Now who can say that the crescent wrench is their favorite tool in the toolbox? Not many, but many have them and they work more often than not.

What do you not like?
I'll take a shot at that question.
I've got a bolt gun that holds as much ammo, less expensive, and feels better in my hands and on my shoulder.
I don't own one yet because I've prioritized my funds for things I like more. If the day comes I have a grand or so burning holes in my wallet, I might look at one if my boat doesn't need anything.
I just don't gravitate toward them.

They certainly have their place. They're like lego rifles. You can build them up pretty much however you want without having to have a bunch of custom gunsmith work (in most cases). I have an AR-15, AR-10, & AR-9... and they're fine for what they are, but I don't admire them like I do my wood-stocked bolts and levers.

I own a few but never liked them. I don't like the ergonomics of a pistol grip on a rifle. I don't like the ugly black finish and furniture. Etc etc

They are a great rifle. From kids to adults they can fit well enough, no recoil, light, can be adapted to most roles etc etc. I certainly understand why they are so popular

Who doesn’t own one or like them and why? Imo all they are good for is mag dumps and shooting games, but i am a hunter and all my long guns are hunting related. I have been debating really hard on getting one but really all i can see myself using it for would be coyote hunting and maybe shooting games, steel plate shooting, etc. i just don’t see a practical purpose. Anyone else the same?

Maybe i would be more suited with a PCR. I am slightly intrigued by the AR after handling a few today and shooting one. I’m thinking maybe it would be fun and if i end up hating it i could sell it.

Biden would love you.

Then you'd probably be shocked to hear I hardly ever put more than 5 rounds at a time in my AR mags when at the range and haven't done a mag dump since I got rid of the binary trigger that I took to the range once before selling it.

Why is one less "hunting".

Ones a 223 savage 12 fV. 26 inch barrel. Shoots one hole at 100 yards. Killed hundreds of varmint/predator.

The others a white oak 20 inch 223. Also one hole at 100 yards. Also killed many varmint and predator.

The AR and the 12 fv are very close in weight. Both portly. Lol. The AR is far better for 2 a followup on a second yote.

Now as far as anything other than 223 I don't see the appeal. I'll take a normal bolt gun.

As an Army Veteran and military historian, my interest in the AR platform is mostly service oriented and extends from the Vietnam-era to what I supervised for issue out the company arms room on 9/11, namely the M16A2 and early M4 (with carry handle) styles. I have little interest in the "Barbie-for-Men" overaccesorized platforms that have become the current status quo. My next purchase in this area will probably be a M16A1 replica or an original full-size SP1.

As we approached the 2004 sunset of the 94 Assault Weapon Ban the anti-gun side of the issue made it a mantra of theirs that you did not need an AR to hunt. In response as the ban sun-set the AR segment of the firearms in larger part set out to prove the the AR was a great weapon for hunting in addition to the uses it had initially been designed for. As a result we saw a huge influx of new configurations, accessories, and cartridges that were introduced in whole or in part to make the AR a great hunting gun. Before 2004 there were only a few other cartridges you could get an AR in other than the original 223/556. Now there is a list of nearly a hundred cartridges that the AR has been chambered in from 17 cal rimfire all the way up to 50 caliber cartridges and even a few shotgun bases ARs. Many of those 100 cartridges were designed specifically for the AR platform while others are older cartridges that were already compatible to various degrees.

The AR platform is now a well proven platform and if you have the itch you can put an AR together to be appropriate for just about anything you might want to hunt on the planet. If you hear AR and only think 223/556 you are missing a huge amount of the AR's potential.

Chambered in something other than .223/5.56 they are very effective large game hunting rifles. As a bonus, very non-mechanically oriented people like me can take them apart, fix them, and put them back together again. If I screw something up, replacement parts are cheap and everywhere. Even with low end ones, it is trivially easy to get stupid accuracy that is more than sufficient for shots as long as you care to take on deer sized prey. As a bonus, if I drop one in the river or have to use it as a canoe paddle, I will not be heartbroken like I would with a vintage Marlin lever.

I own AR platform guns in 7 different calibers. I have no real fondness of them. They are cold and unattractive.

Whereas shotguns and rifles with wood furniture are warm and beautiful

@Axis II I would like to recommend that you give an entry level AR a try.

I bought a lefthanded Stag Arms M4 style AR 10-12 years ago. I also bought a AK 47, 7-8 years ago. I came to the conclusion that they are really good at eating ammo. I sold both when I retired. I prefer hunting with a bolt action or lever action.
I also prefer target shooting with a bolt, where an inexpensive model can deliver exceptional accuracy.
Home defense; I like a shotgun and/or handgun.

I recommend you give an AR try to see if its right for you. $600-800 for the rifle. You will quickly consume that much $$$ in ammo. Remember that ARs are really good at eating ammo 🤣
Yeah, that’s another reason i really never got one. I love sitting on the bench, taking my time and squeezing rounds off from a bolt gun. I’ve been wanting to get rid of some coyotes for awhile and seems you get multiple dogs comes in and first shot everything is gone or sometimes they don’t drop from one shot.

What do you not like? I ask because i can’t quite put my finger on it for my situation.
They just don't get me excited.
I'm a little old school. I like wood and blue bolt action rifles and wood and blue lever guns. Most of my guns serve a purpose, and an AR doesn't fit into any of t he things I like to do. Not for me anyway. I use rifles for deer hunting and while some hunt with ARs, I don't feel the .223 is adequate for my needs. If I ever get an AR, it will likely be an AR10. I do love the .308 round so that may be something I would like.

I don't know that I dislike them, they just don't snap my cap.

My primary hunting rifle is a Gen 3 PA-10 in .308. My next purchase is probably going to be a 6.8 SPC II AR.

They are tools just like my other rifles.
I like tools too. But I'm not a tool blogger
