I prefer the AK just due to having much experience with one, and a pretty good level of expertise, if I don't say so myself! The AR, none at all other than I built one and I like it, but it just doesn't really float my boat in any way. (she's good looking for sure, M16A1 Clone with BCM barrel) I can still assemble and disassemble my AK blindfolded, I'd have to get out a book or refresh myself via youtube in order to really strip the AR down beyond a field-strip. I would never grab the AR instead of the AK if the aliens attacked, would not even cross my mind, but again that's due to no expertise with an AR, and the AK being very familiar territory. Never have shot or used an AR enough to trust it. Can it be trusted? of course. But in the AK, I truly trust.
On accuracy, my friend and I both came within a few points of making rifleman with our '74's, at two Appleseed shoots. The only others to do so, at both shoots were shooting scoped 1022's. (I almost made it with my Garand, and 03A3 Springfield too, at other/different Appleseed shoots.) The AK is accurate. I think it was a bad day when Appleseed decided to allow .22LR's to be used. But that, is another story.
On looks, a box-stock AK without the thumbhole stock looks way better than short little AR's with doo-dads and rails, scopes, flashlights and electric gizmos hanging all over them. That's UGLY! And I know ugly. However, I think the most good-looking battle rifle of modern type is the M16A1. Crude? Perhaps, but in a cool steam-punk sort of way. But of course, one can start hanging after market doo-dadds and stocks all over an AK, and reach a higher level of ugliness, if it is ugly to begin with. But again, not ugly to me. Cool looking. Boss! Bitchen!
