Who likes AK type rifles?

If the original CAR-15 / M16 had been designed with the same sights as the AK, a 16” barrel, and also in 7.62x39 (ballistic coefficient)—

—-comparisons of accuracy then could be objective?

I think the classic ak47 is functionally beautiful, from the plywood stock and forend, to the steel banana mags, and the point it and let her rip personality. I've had several, and one was very accurate, but after having a few other guns that shoot 7.62x39, an ak is not on my list anymore unless it's sub $500 and I get to shoot it first before purchasing. I love the cartridge though.

Truth, (mosin77) although, every time I see an M16A1....I do start hearing the Doors play a song. :)

I like the look of them. If scopes were easy to mount. I would own one. Today's prices on them are crazy.

Well, I think the AK is a desert best served without scopes, red-dots, or other doo-dads. It's really a "keep it simple" rifle, as it is a simple rifle. No matter how much one likes optics, it's smart to keep one's skills with iron sights sharp, and if for no other reason, the AK is a good trainer for that.

oh boy. No fan boys like AK fan boys.
While I am an AK fan boy, we are not the worst by a long shot. That honor goes to AR fan boys. To prove my point, in any thread where someone asks a rifle choice, one always, and I mean always chimes in with: “You should get an AR.” I’m quite positive I even read that type of comment in a revolver thread.

That's the only one I have that shoots very well. It's a 1.5 moa gun though. I have several very valuable old bolt actions and lever guns that won't outshoot it. Lol. And considering it's chrome lined and it's never seen anything but steel cases that's pretty impressive.

I have quite a few more AR than AK but I still believe I'd choose the AK for battle. I wouldn't be terribly upset with either.

AK and a Glock.

Some chose AK-design rifles not because they favor them. They are going to be in environments that are hellish ... where their weaponry simply has to work no matter how filthy / sandy the conditions.

If they need better accuracy with an AK type rifle, then they find ones with milled receivers. That helps a bit. Just a bit. Long discussion -- chamber design, all that.

Right. I don't think it's an "either-or" situation. The AK has it's "place" even if one "prefers" the AR. And visa-versa. I built my M16A1 clone (semi-auto, for any creepy lawyers listening) even though I prefer the AK. The AK74's are usually very accurate, more so than the 47 I believe. But not being familiar with the AR platform, it made a lot of sense to me to have one. Do I like it? Yes. But yeah I'd be grabbing the AK first if things got weird.

Having said that I don't like optics on an AK, my Romanian does have the QD side-rail, and I do have a scope set up for it. On a practice solo scout, I keep that in the pack, "just in case". The rifle certainly has the accuracy to utilize it. But I wouldn't carry it around with scope on. And really I'd use it more as an observation tool, than for shooting at people. If I'm far enough away from bad guys to need the scope, I'm far enough away to escape and evade. If I'm working with others, and looking for trouble, someone in the group will be the "DM", and hopefully have a rifle more suited to the purpose. Or perhaps myself, with my bogus replica No.4(T). :)

Love me some AKs!
Have a SAR-1, SAM7R, Milled MAK90, Draco SBR, and just picked up a Maadi ARM kit:)
Not an AK, a CSA Vz58 QCB
That rounds out my 762x39 collection.
Like ARs too, and Mini 14s. Life is too short to snob on some quality weaponry…

I feel the same. I have no bias when it comes to firearms. I like just about all semi auto rifles.

Truth. As I said, I "prefer" the AK over the AR, but I sure would not argue that one is "better" than the other. For some, or most, or all of us one is better than the other, but that is just called "preference".

Pro Sec. Amendment people try to tell the Feinsteins, Schumers, "Everytown Gun wotever" anti-gun groups,

....that the guns are not evil (Newsflash: not even AKMs- or the new "Taliban Rifle", the heaps of US M4s ;) we gave them), the evil is in the person who decides to murder people.

Maybe some of our Fudds with their heads up their *** will benefit from this distinction, choose to use some critical-thinking (vs. emotion), instead of tacitly, knowingly assisting the gun-grabbers.

Ain't that the truth! I heard it mentioned on several occasions that American gun owners in general are stuck up snobs, spoiled bratts, and take everything for granted by men and women in other countries in the comment section YouTube videos and on social media who would love to own the crap we bicker about and over analyze. It's kind of like starving people watching rich people whine, complain, and bicker amongst themselves about which which 4 star restaurant has the best caviar.

I'm the same way. I'm a true gun nut so I like it all. AKs, ARs, SCARs, G3 variants, FAL variants, CZ Bren, Mini 14 and Mini 30, bullpups, semiautos, revolvers, DAO, SAO, DA/SA, striker fire, 9mm, 40s&w, 45acp, so on and so forth.

I go through phases on which rifle platform I like the best, but I lean towards imported rifles with wood furniture and a historical past.

For what most folks will likely need in the way of a home defense rifle or a hunting rifle, the AK-47 serves well enough. Plenty accurate with quality ammo, it'll maintain 'minute of bad guy' out to 300m. Beyond that, better to displace than engage.

AKs are worth their weight in fun.

I like my AK. It is a Kalashnikov USA KR 103. It shoots really smoothly and can easily make hits on man-sized targets to 300 yards with iron sights.

I would not take it varmint hunting, but I would be more than happy with it for a civil defense rifle.

Yep, I shall say again, for "civil defense" it will be very difficult to positively I.D. if something/someone is a threat at 300 yards. And certainly not 400-500-600 yards. (although I can hit a people size torso target at 500 yards consistently with an Ak, SKS, 91/59, M1 or Mauser) (can't tell if it's a good guy or bad guy though) But plenty of distance to escape and evade, or reach some kind of safety or defendable position.

The AK is the Official Gun of Hurricane Alley – during Ian I had my Yugo M70 loaded and ready to go, very comforting during those long, dark nights with no power, save for a generator.

And the sight and sound of an AK action being cycled alone will deter would be looters; there’s nothing else like it.
