Hello all,

I have done business with several quality holster craftsmen and woman over the years. Many are beautiful but not functional, functional but not beautiful, both or neither. Some are great but end up in drawers, some pierce you in the side like a a roman spear, and others find themselves seeing use because they just can't be kept down.

So I thought I would take this opportunity to share some of my favorite holsters that are functional and comfortable enough to see rotation down here. I invite you to do the same.

IWB/OWB: I have to give credit to Ray Cory at Lobo Gun Leather for making 2 of my favorite holsters - an IWB for a S&W 296 snub and an OWB for a Ruger Sp101. Ray's holsters smell great, have lasting dye jobs, and do an excellent job retaining the weapon (maybe too excellent at first, but you can break them in very easily). Runner up to Simply Rugged for the sourdough pancake and crossbreed holsters for the supertuck. Both are good, but lobo wins here, for me.

Pocket: I have tried several brands that I won't mention, but Bob Mika's Pocket Holsters will be my go-to purchase for any pocket holster. Not enough can be said about the service and commitment here. I have at least 6 of these for various models - he even made one for the Gp100 which is definately NOT going in my pocket. Still sees use on the GP when traveling in a case.

Ankle: The winner for me is clear as well: Renegade holsters "cozy partner". You just have to try it to see how good it is.

Classic: Ok, this one doesn't get much use because I don't own it yet, but I wanted to give a shout out to CraigC of the high road for making some of the best looking classic holsters I have seen. Looking forward to this rig for BBQ's and Hikes where the blackhawk can come along in Craig's cali slim jim. No comment on use yet but I will update when it comes.

How about you?

Hard choice but I guess I would go with my Galico shoulder rig . Depends on how you dress and what you do .. Driving and walking sitting in a restaurant.. I guess I like the shoulder rig the best .

In mass produced holsters? Galco.

As a 'custom maker' TrailRider Products. (Cowboy leather)

I've used Milt Sparks for IWB and Simply Rugged for OWB. There are other makers I'd like to get leather from but don't have the money yet.

I love my Galco King Tuk for EDC IWB. I don't really have the budget for some of the higher end all leather rigs but if I had to chose one of them it would be a Milt Sparks

I've been amazed by the comfort, durability, and conceal-ability of my Aliengear IWB for my full sized semiauto. Didn't hurt that it was about $40 shipped.

Aegis armory shield holster is also very comfortable. One of the few kydex IWB hybrid that allow you to use a flashlight with. I have one for my PX4 storm with viridian CTL light

I am going to agree with the OP Tony, for a reasonable price Lobo Gun Leather makes a nice product, I have a Tom Threeperson and a couple of pancakes for 1911's from Ray. I have a beautiful burgundy high grain horesehide pancake but for most practical uses I pull out a Lobo.

I have not owned a Hunter, but have a cheap version they sell for revolvers at Cabelas coming today. The products in their catalog look quite well made. I want to look at Craigs products because I believe in supporting members.

Have bought several mass production made holsters and they get the thumbs down from me.

The best Kydex is the Silent Thunder from Garrett Industries. Leather lined and adjustable , I would not stick my nice metal gun in an unlined plastic holster. Plastic gun into plastic holster fine.

I like DeSantis for functional factory holsters, along with some older Bianchi designs.

I cheat...

By making my own. If it doesn't come out right I have no one else to blame. On occasion I've made two or three before I got it "exactly right," but after that it's been good to go.

Usually I don't do any tooling except possibly along the border (edges) because I tend to mold the leather around the gun. Tooling can cut some of the leather's fibers, and that isn't good for what I'm doing.

Functional? It depends on the function.

For the field, banging about in the woods: Simply Rugged

For IWB daily carry: Alien Gear

For pocket carry: DeSantis

For "I just want to put this G26 on and off easily": Fobus paddle holster

For open carry with a bit of flair: El Paso Saddlery

Like I said, it depends upon the function.

As far as functional goes, my favorite is my Raven Concealment Phantom. As far as kydex holsters go it is about as concealable as they come. They are also easy to draw from and reholster. It works well for the range or concealment.

I can wear it OWB, and adjust the ride height or cant. I can also wear the same holster IWB with a variety of IWB attachments. If I could only have one holster, this would be the one.

While this type of holster (there are lots of companies making similar designs) is mostly marketed to the "tactical crowd" they really are a great choice for those new to carrying. They allow you to try out a variety of different carry methods and positions with just the one holster.

I forgot to post a link for those that may not be familiar with the product.

For IWB, the Milt Sparks VM-II rules.
For OWB, I favor Kramer's Belt Scabbard (pancake style) in horsehide.
For training (Kydex), Safariland's ALS.

For the first holster I normally get just to have a holster for every new handgun purchase, due to availability and pretty good off-the-shelf quality -- Galco ...because I can generally find a Galco for everything in my local retail stores or order on-line and get it quickly.

Galco or DeSantis for the big boys. for the smaller ones there are a ton. Ken Null, Milt Sparks, and Don Hume to name a few.
