Why doesn't Gander Mountain and Cabelas sell AKs? They sell AR 15s and such so it's not like they are against EBRs. Any ideas?

Probably a volume issue. With the number of firearms they go through I can't think of anyone who could keep them stocked. There havealways been some AK's around, but not really in the large numbers for a real big retailer.

I have seen a Romanian Kalashnikov for sale at the Cabelas in LaVista Nebraska. It was only one and I have never seen one for sale there again.

I've seen used WASR and other AK oids in the used section of Cabelas.

Gander Mountain and Cabelas likely only buy new firearms from a handful of wholesalers, and further likely only buy those new weapons for which there is a marketable brand name and post-sales support.

That rules out most any of the AK 'manufacturers', since they tend to be small shops that either do not sell through the big wholesalers or who lack the market draw and post-sale support attributable to Rock River or DPMS.

Just my guess.

Saiga.

They’d come in a non-threatening configuration and available in .223/5.56 and .308 along with 7.62x39mm. Sell the shotgun line as well. ;)

From time to time, I see AK's on the used racks at the Fort worth Cabelas. They usually have a bunch of "new/unissued" Yugo SKS too, but they put them on the "used" rack because you're buying "as is".

Look at some vendors ie Scheels in the upper plains states. They at one time did like Goose Mtn did not sell EBR's. They at one time did not sell Glocks cause Glock did not have adequate product liability? And, they will only take tades of certain brands of guns....

I guess when the ex Warsaw pact nations, and the Chinese start making AK's in Varmint configurations
(flat top receivers with picatinny rails, and 24" bull barrels and .204 Ruger chamberings) we'll be seing a lot more of them on the gun shelves of Gander Mountian, Bass Pro, and Cabellas!

AKs are still made, besides Gander always has a rack full of Mosin Nagants. You don't need a marketable brand for an AK, they just sell themselves.

One thing that I recently noticed about the Gander Mountain in Hattiesburg, MS, when they first opened, they had probably thirty or fourty AR variants on the shelf displayed openly ( you could walk right up, pick them up etc) now, they only have a few that are behind lock and key. A couple of Remington Variants and I saw a couple of Bushmasters. I wonder why? First time I went in there, thought to myself "Lord have mercy, gunshow at a retail store" but now, kindof a waste of time, although I still go frequently.

They have them in Houston (290 location), but only the $750-800 ones.
In the new section or sitting with the used?

The KC Cabela's had WASRs. I sold several while I was there. I think the main problem is that Cabela's buyers never anticipated the kind of demand that exists for WASRs and SKSs right now. We never had more than a handful in stock at any one time and these days they sell on sight.

It's just the Sidney crowd being completely out of touch since they started hiring the Home Depot/Walmart refugees.

The KC store had zero...as in none.... boxes of Federal Pheasants Forever 12 ga right before the season opened. The only store in the system that had any to speak of was Mitchell and they sold out pretty quickly.

They're no longer the "World's Foremost Outfitter"; they're just another big box store that has some guns.
