I'm the happy owner of 3 Mosin Nagants (and many other firearms).
These are the following reasons why I decided to buy them rather than an Enfield, Mauser or other military rifles (from the non strictly antique collectors perspective...I am a "practical shooting" collector)

- Price. You cannot beat it at $ 75..the cheapest Enfield or Mauser I can find at the moment are well over $ 200...for that price I can easily buy an used Savage, Stevens, Remington or a nice sporterized and "scope ready" Mauser all of them in excellent conditions and chambered in the popular 30-06. Sometimes at that price you get those rifles even with a decent scope.
A Springfield 03 is chambered in 30-06 but cost wise it is on a different ballpark with prices often exceeding those in brand new quality rifles.

- Ammunition. Ammo for the Mosin are cheap, even the civilian hunting ammo (I never shoot surplus). I can easily buy a box of 7,62 X 54R for less than $10.
For the 8 mm Mauser (the anemic American version) or the 303 British instead, you need to fork out more than $25 a box unless you buy surplus (in rapidly decreasing supply)
Furthermore, ammo for the Mosin nowdays are more easily found than the 8 mm Mauser or the 303. I'm not a reloader.

Because the 54R is stil in use in modern military weapons in major mlitary forces, I suppose this cartridge will be around for very long time almost surely outliving 8 mm Mauser and 303 British.

The economic cost is stacked against sporterizing one of my Mosin....as I mentioned before I can get a very good used sporter or modern rifle in 06, maybe even with a scope for the price of buying a sporter stock and gunsmith costs for scope base installation.

My reasoning make sense to you???

Regards

P.S.

Last year for few weeks Big 5 had a batch of Yugo Mauser in very good conditions a $89....at that price even considering the ammo shortcomings (price and availability, American anemic version) I would have bought it.
I lost that train....

Back in the pre-Russian-milsurp-ammo days, when I had to buy ultra-expensive Norma 7.62x54r ammo, I sold a beautifully sporterised Remington Mosin because I couldn't afford to feed it! Now I have 880 rounds (these will last the rest of my life) of plinking ammo I paid $80.00 for, and can buy hunting ammo cheaper than dirt...Damn, I wish I still had that rifle. It probably never saw a corrosive round in it's life. I do, however, have a nice-shooting 1942 Tula with matching numbers that I intend to make into a similar hunting rifle.

Based on your declared uses for the rifle, I'd say you made a good choice.

I love shooting the milsurp ammo through mine, it is accurate and inexpensive. Corrosive ammo is a non issue if you clean your rifle.

What a fun rifle to shoot.

Makes perfects sense if you like them. I am not drawn to mosins, but they are sure worth the $75 price tag if the bore is good.

Works 4 me!

I have 1 M-N...a 1954 Romanian M-44. A real "Blast!" {bad pun intended} to shoot...

Once made a guy shooting a .300WinMag leave the line..."Your gun is too **** LOUD!"

You should never ever have to explain your gun purchases to the shooting community... maybe your wife but not us :)

You like Mosin I like Enfield - can't we all just fire at will.

Enfields and Mausers are readily available for less than $200. In fact, you can currently get .308 Mausers for less than $150.

Mine came from the Gunshop with the ATI bolt and rail already installed. 89 bucks.. stopped on the way home at WallyWorld where I picked up a 6-18 50mm Bushnell scope for a C-note plus 20 bucks. Spent some time cleaning the stock, and using J&B's bore cleaner and now have a cloverleaf shooter. When I put the bayonet on the end I have a great pig sticker. What's not to like?

I like my mosin, but have to disagree with you on one point. .303 British is FAR more common around me than either 8mm Mauser of 7.62x54r. I CANNOT find x54r at any stores I have tried. (alot)

That's odd, 54R is available at every gun store I know of in town, even Sportsman's Warehouse.

I love Mosins because they're werid, old and powerful. Plus sometimes you get one that can make the most astonishing shots--esp. some of the Finns. And you never know exactly how the rifle is going to hash out. Every rifle is like Christmas.

Is rifle. Is good.

I have been tempted to get a Mosin so many times but when it comes down to it, I just cannot pull the trigger on one. I'd rather have a Mauser.

Around here (Seattle) the 54R nowdays is available everywhere except Wal Mart....I definitely see them around mroe than 303 and the price difference is more than double.
You can buy the usually overpriced Winchester 54R (rebadged S&B) significantly less than 303 or 8 mm Mauser.

Nice Mosin the one with bent bolt and scope...I would have bought it myself at that price..lucky!!!

Enfields and Mausers are readily available for less than $200. In fact, you can currently get .308 Mausers for less than $150.

It is true but we are talking Milsup rifles in their original conditions.
Here in Seattle you cannot buy an original Enfield or Mauser at the moment for less than 200 including gun shows.

For few weeks last spring Big 5 had a batch of Yugo Mauser for $89-99..they evaporated faster than a water puddle in the Sahara desert.....

You can find a rechambered and/or sporterized 30-06 or 308 Mauser for around 150 (and they definitely get my attention if in good conditions) but not Enfield for less the 200...categoric....maybe somewhere else in the country

I do not have a license so if I buy from somewhere else I have to consider the shipping and paperwork cost (a gun shop around here charges a minimum of $25)

I'm a Mosin Nagant fan, onw two Mosins. A Finish M24 and a Polish M44. I like the history of Mosin.

But best milsurp in my opinion is the Swiss K31. Here in Switzerland K31 are cheaper the Mosin Nagant.

Will does not like being fired at Dirtypacman

No, he doesn't. I know him and he keeps an AK ready to roll for just that reason! ;)

No need to really put any opinion about the topic in here, just check the username and the sig.

Your plan makes sense, I standardized to K-31s based on the quality of the rifle and the .308 bullet for reloading rather than the .311ish of the Nagant. Had an M-44, sold it in the interest of simplifying the collection.

I have sevral mosins, from the 38s and 44s to the longer 91/30s. I do agree that corossives is ok to shoot as long as you clean it afterwards. not wait a week. I bought a 91/30 just to scope and see how far it would shoot. If sighted in prioperly there is no drop at 150 yards.right and left is shooter issue when sighted. Fun& cheap, its all fun and safe. good luck with all, Bob

I have 4, 91/30, M38, M44, and a Sporterized M38.
I currently have 10K+ rds of x54r on the shelf.
I also have an FPK to feed in the same caliber.

Mosins are cheap fun and plentiful.

I also have Mausers, Enfields, and K31's.

I thinks it's a disease. :what:

I've got 5 MN's myself, but I can't really understand limiting yourself to only one variety of milsurp.

OK, I guess I'll play the jerk, here.

You have established they are cheap. That's fine. But does that make them good? Saying something is good for the money isn't saying too much. Hald price poop is still poop.

They are fine guns and I own one, but they are just not in the same class as a Mauser or a Springfield. Even the Enfield, clunky as it is, holds a heck of a lot more ammo and has a turned down bolt to boot.

Remember Russian logic "Better is the enemy of good enough." I am yet to see the Russian or Soviet weapon that didn't reflect that thinking. They didn't keep manufacturing them because they were so great. They keep using them because their army is gigantic. They make what they have machines to make, they use what they make. They have to. Even today you see them using the AKM even though that hasn't been their "offical" rifle for decades. I am yet to see an AB-100 actually in use.

The mosin is a decent gun, but lets not get carried away.

OK, going back in the jerk box.

Joe
