Why is it that the AR can only be had in only a few calibers?

I am sorry Gents I like your enthusiasm but what I mean by Ar variants I mean M16 AR15 variants. I like machine guns too but you got my hopes up with the 8MM mauser. I really like the 308 round. The AR15 platform is very successful in it's own right and has one heck of a following and nowhere near about to die. Just a little longer in the magazine well, a little longer upper, bolt and carrier assembly if need be and a lower is all I ask at a reasonable price. I am sure there is a following out there somewhere. The cartridges don't have to be a magnum but a nice 260 remington or 6.5x55 on a "proven and successful" yet popular platform that is reasonably priced.

I'm confused - that answer was the AR10 platform that was mentioned a bunch of posts back in this thread....

DPMS, Bushmaster, and Armalite all have made versions of that and ROck River Arms is in the process of releasing theirs.... The DPMS is available in 260, last I checked.

I've not tried the DPMS - I have an Armalite in 308.

As it sits, I have about twelve hundred into it not including the optic. But that includes the float tube, adjustable gas system, Jard single-stage trigger, adjustable buttstock, and the Ergo grip and Magpul trigger guard....

I've chosen not to get the 260 simply because I can load up 308 165gr bullets and (out to 300 yards) get a pretty equivilent trajectory when compared to a 14ogr 260. Past 300 yards - the 260 will start to shine *if* you use match-grade bullets instead of hunting bullets. But since my goal was 300 yard or less hunting use, there just wasn't a compelling reason to move from 308, and support for the 308 in an AR platform is very strong when compared to the 260.

That's a good point with a 308 if you go hunting and 300 yards is far enough to shoot for, I'll not contest that. I went shooting with a friend of mine yesterday with a remington 700 and he had average rounds and match rounds and man I could really tell the difference between the both of them. the average rounds only shot 2 1/2'' groups and the match 1'' through the same rifle.

How about magazine availability for the DPMS .243? I wouldn't mind getting one for hunting in the woods, but DPMS only lists 19-round magazines, which are illegal for deer hunting in Minnesota.

I refuse to shoot a bad guy with a foriegn made weapon shooting foriegn made ammo. Unless of course it's an emergency.

Olympic Arms also has an AR in .223 WSSM and .243 WSSM. The new .450 Bushmaster has some appeal as well.

The Oly is probably a great gun, but I'll stick with DPMS because I've had such terrific service from the company. Every once in a great while I run across a company that takes pride in taking care of its customers. When I do, I give them my business, especially when they sell a terrific product at one of the best prices on the market. If it ain't broke...
