I have an older, Israeli surplus MK II Browning Hi-Power I absolutely love, but I've been limited to range use due to my absolute fumbling with the tiny safety catch on it.

My thumbs cant seem to make contact with it with the satisying "click" my 1911's give off.

I know they make a wider, higher profile safety catch for these- anyone have any experience with swapping one out?

Is it something a somewhat clumsy amateur gun-tinkerer can accomplish himself or should I seek out gunsmith help? An are there any brand parts the experts here like?

Never cared for the tiny safety on my T Series Hi-Power; nearly impossible to put on and take off. When I saw the new and improved safety on the Mk.II when it first came out I knew they were on to something there in finally getting it right.

Removing the old safety and then replacing it with another does take some effort and a certain amount of gunsmithing ability. I did a quick Google search and found several videos and a few step-by-step instructions on other forums concerning this very subject. Give them a look and see what you think.

It is very doable if you can follow instructions. The best I have found are on Stephen Camp’s website: https://hipowersandhandguns.com/Disassembly Guide.htm. This is an illustrated disassembly guide with great photos and step by step instructions. I was able to completely strip my hipower to the frame and replace all springs, remove magazine disconnect, replace trigger spring, hammer mainspring and slick up the safety while apart using the guide. Made a huge difference.

Camp’s widow still monitors the site and sends out the guides. Well worth the $12 cost.

My safety is also the tiny original version but now works nicely with a positive click on and off with a little stoning.

Wow that's nice; definitely the thing to have (and well worth the price as you said), to go with your Hi-Power! I also found Camp's relatively brief instructions and descriptions on another forum. It was pretty straightfoward with a note to take care when removing metal from the replacement safety (the "nub' as he called it), if it was the Cylinder and Slide Shop version.

Camp's site is invaluable for hipower information! The articles are engaging and most have several great photos. I learned a lot reading through them. It's sad that he passed away, but the information he left is amazing.
