I looked it up, and he can if he chooses to. I didn't believe the Secret Service allowed it, but even though they prefer he doesn't, being the President, he can.
He does now, I think an H&K, although I remenber he had a Rorenback, when they came out, "if I spelled it correctly".
So Regan was the last one to carry, he had a 38 in his briefcase, and carried more on his ranch than in the Oval, but he did carry.
Do you think Trump will carry? I think he may, perhaps in the beginning, I think if I were him I would, as there are a lot of people who have painted targets on the man.

Why would you think the POTUS needs permission from anyone to carry? How can the Secret Service "not allow" the POTUS to do something he wants to do? They work for him. The USSS can advise him but not tell him what to do. POTUS is the Chief Executive which includes being Commander in Chief and runs all LE and prosecution functions.

The USSS did not want GW Bush to get on the stump with a bullhorn at Ground Zero after 9/11. Bush put himself in a position where the USSS had nearly zero ability to protect him. Bush wanted to do it so he did.

Interesting question. I have never thought about a President carrying a firearm. Does anyone know of a U.S. President actually "Pack'in"?

I would believe that he does and will !.

If he chooses to not carry, then I lose a bit of respect for ANYONE that allows others to be responsible for the safety of themselves AND their loved ones.

I recall a movie where the man is about to be hunted by REALLY bad dudes.

He is protected by a full load of armed fed's.

The perps get into the house and his wife grabs the ONLY GUN IN THE HOUSE ---- but does not know where the shells are !!.

I about spit out my spleen at that one.

Remember when Mr. Trump was rushed off stage before the election due to a perceived threat? Those guys who hustled him off stage weren't U.S. Secret Service - they were his own guys. His own private security can probably do a better job than the U.S. Secret Service because they have no rules. You should see the guy who heads up his security outfit. I saw a video where he grabbed some dude who was getting all up in Mr. Trump's space at Trump Tower. The head of security flicked that guy away like a booger. Plus he already has his own fleet of airliners and I would almsot bet he buys contract fuel for them cheaper than what the Govt. pays.

"Patriot Games". Anne Archer proved that even an unloaded firearm can be dangerous...

Any and all speculation on what Trump will do concerning guns is pointless.
He traded words for votes previous to the election, and nothing in his past life has indicated he's a "gunnie".

It's a matter of wait & see, with the only qualifier worth commenting on being that it's highly likely he at least will not actively go after guns, as his opponent promised she would.
Whether he'll support 'em or just leave 'em alone entirely remains to be seen.

Reagan carried on occasion, usually a 38, in his Briefcase, "just in case". But the story goes most times it was on the ranch, although he had it available. The Secret Service prefers that the Pres doesn't carry, but he can if he choses. I think Trump, being Trump, will carry his H&K, or maybe something new. He's a cool guy, in that respect. He doesn't really care what conventional thought is on the matter.

I'd sure as hell carry, and probably a full size gun too. We've averaged about one serious assassination attempt a term since JFK was assassinated. It's a VERY dangerous job. GWB had a live grenade thrown at him in Georgia (the country, not the state). A guy shot up the Obama Whitehouse. Clinton came within feet of being assassinated by Bin Laden with a bomb. And then of course there was Hinckley and "Squeeky" Fromme. Sara Moore actually shot at Ford, but missed. Arthur Bremer who shot George Wallace tried for Nixon first and was scared off by the secret service.

If I were the head of the Secret Service, there'd be a standing program to teach handgun handling at least to the level of CCW requirements in states that require live fire. Then, procure them a handgun.

In the game of chess, the king has some level of defensive capability. Handy if all else fails.

Plus, there would be an upside. POTUS would have a glimpse into our world. Might lead to fewer attacks against the Second Amendment.

Texas has a range requirement for a LTC. Only a blind person would not pass.

I sure hope he will!

If I was President, I'd have a MP7 or a P90 strapped inside my jacket, just in case. Maybe a M4 with a can the laptop bag. Partly because I would be President, partly because this is America, and partly because you never know what crap some loonies are going to try to pull these days.

The pres. has better things to do that stand around trading bullets with someone. I doubt they'd let him carry.

Trump is the 600 lb gorilla. And where does a 600 lb gorilla sleep? Answer: Anywhere he wants to.

Trump can pack, or not pack, a gun. SS, FBI, CIA, DIA, NSA, KG-used-to-B, etc. not withstanding.

Will he, who knows. But I bet he can hide a small snub or Glock .380 and you would never know it.

Considering the negative passions generated by his election, I certainly hope he will carry a gun all the time.

Even two of 'em. The remark about New York Reloads (AKA Chicago Reloads) is appropriate.

He's said he has a permit, and I therefore assume he's had a certain minimal amount of training. And as far as "in fear of life or grievous injury" goes, he's got that going for him 25/8.

I tell ya true, if that guy ever gets a Ham Radio License, I'd call him a good drinking buddy AKA "He'll do to ride the river with."

And I'd even buy the drinks.

So what makes everyone think Trump is a gun lover and carries every day? The only thing I ever heard him say is he has a permit and sometimes carries, but I'm not sure I believe he actually carries on a regular basis. He's not some tough guy highly trained warrior you know, I always considered him to just be another well connected draft dodger.

My apologies for post #22, another attempt at using a cellphone to reply.

Edmund Morris, one of the principal biographers of Theodore Roosevelt, confirms that Teddy carried while President:

Not only did Theodore Roosevelt carry, but FDR's wife Eleanor carried, too:
