I just burning time the other day in a local gun shop and I came up on a winchester 1400 20ga for 225. it look pretty good I just was wonder is that a good price it's a mod choke looked like a 26 in barrel wood stock it shoulder well my concern was with it be a older gun would a mod choke shoot steel not bb or really high velocity. Thanks

Be well advised that there are parts on the 1200,1300, and 1400 series Winchester shotguns that will break and there are no replacement parts.

Also note that that series of guns was Winchesters way of building a shotgun as cheap as possible and safe to shoot!

Bought one several years back; it handled well enough and the price was right. It was a very soft shooter and it fit me well enough, but I sold it shortly after I had to repair its broken plastic magazine throat. It was hard to find a replacement at the time, but MGW does still shows some 20ga throats available, for $50 each.

I just decided that I didn't need a gun with designed-in parts breakage issues.

I have read that back in the sixties, Winchester had franchised some trap/skeet ranges and stocked them with 1400s. When the factory reps called to see what the clubs needed they were told, "anything but more 1400s?" Can't verify but I think it was either a Zutz or Wooters story some time back.

Oh, well, great, everyone hates on the 1400 now. I bought mine in 1988 from Walmart. I've been shooting it ever since. I used it as a dove gun, mostly, but since getting my 20 gauge SxS (the 1400 is a 12), I've mostly shot it on ducks with 2 3/4" number three steel shot. It's a soft shooter and fits me perfectly without shims.

I guess i don't have to worry about you all stealing any of my shotguns. LOL Nobody seems to like any of 'em. Good for me, I suppose. I'd have probably bought that 20 gauge on the spot, been thinkin' about an auto in 20 and I love how soft the 1400s shoot and how well they fit out of the box.

I had one part break in those 26 seasons, going on 27. It broke the finger lever thing that you used to pull the bolt back. There was just a metal stub sticking out where it had been. I found a new part, new production aftermarket, on the numrich arms web site and ordered it and fixed it myself. I could have used it as was, but it was kinda hard on my finger to pull the bolt back. If it ever breaks and I can't fix it, heck, I got 27 (after this season) seasons out of it. I paid $255 for the thing brand new, ain't like I have much in it anyway. I'll fall back to my Mossbergs everyone loves to hate if that happens. Plenty of parts available if anything ever breaks on those. :D And, well, I need a good reason to buy a 930. :D

Oh, yeah, about 10 years ago, I found that Numrich arms had a left hand safety conversion for the 1400 and I bought it and had it installed. I like it MUCH better now, but I'd still rather have a tang safety like the Mossbergs have.

Oh, and if that 1400 was built before about 1980, I wouldn't shoot steel through that barrel. Most of the 1970s and up 1400s have the screw in chokes, so I'm thinkin' that one might be built in the 60s before Winchester came up with the Winchoke system.
