I was at the local Gander Mountain today looking for a semi-auto for the house. I came across a 1400 MKII in excellent condition for $250. Looked really nice so I bought it. I'm having the gunsmith cut the barrel to 18.5" so it's easier to manuver.

Is the 1400 and 1400MKII the same or different? Did I make a good choice? I like semi-auto's better because of the gas system, never really been a pump action man.

I pick it up in two weeks, I'll post some pics then.

I don't know if they are the same gun, but if they are, I think you got a pretty fair deal. I have seen several used 1400s for sale lately, and they were all priced at $250 or higher depending on the condition.

I picked up an old 1974 copy of the Shooter's Bible today from an antique shop. The book has several different 1400 models listed. From what it says the MarkII is an upgraded version of the 1400. They were offered in various configurations, field, deer, trap and skeet, with either plain or vent barrels.

Looks like the one I have is a field model with plain barrel.

I'm guessing yours is a 12 gauge? Did you get a set of chokes with it?

I have one in 20 gauge, and it's pretty nice. Nothing fancy, but shoots just fine.

I have a Winchester 1400 in 12 gauge with winchoke (extended knurled choke tubes). The gun seems to be reliable enough ... I just can't seem to hit much with it.

I think its my problem rather than the gun.

Thanks Dave. I tried a few target loads and she had some ejecting problems. I only plan on using buckshot because it's going to be a house gun. I was thinking #1 or #4 buck should do just fine.

OK. DO read the archives on ammo selection. Also, measure the longest possible op in your domicile, and pattern some loads at that distance plus a yard. Go with the tightest patterns.

I've a hunch that 1 buck may be the best all around size, but do try them all.
