I've had two Winchester 190's. One was marked ".22 S, L, LR" and the other ".22 L or LR".

Anybody know when this marking changed and why?

Thanks.

Can't really help, but my first firearm was a 190. Being an autoloader, I'm surprised any of them would have been labeled anything other than .22LR, but I can't remember how mine was labeled.

It sure about the 190 but some 22’s were made with a floating chamber so you could shoot 22 shorts and long rifle. Not sure how it worked

I don’t know the exact date of manufacture of my 190, serial: B784XXX. It is marked 22 S, L, LR.

I have one as well, it's very accurate with a terrible trigger. I started having misfires and discovered the barrel was unscrewing from the receiver. A homemade spanner wrench and some lock tight will fix this.

Mine is marked shorts but I've never tried to use them. I believe mine is from the 1980s

I have the Model 290 with the fancy Monte Carlo stock (B1066xxx). It's marked .22 L or LR. I have fired shorts with it with no problems. Very accurate rifle. Armadillos and Opossums at 100 yards are no problem.

By the way...Has anyone seen longs for sale lately? I haven't seen longs in years. Just shorts and long rifles.

Bought a box of 100 CCI CB Longs just this fall, though I cannot recall if it was at Theissens or Scheels. More to have them around than anything else, but I’ve dedicated a few of my .22s to shoot Shorts exclusively and as all of these happen to be capable of feeding Longs, I figured if they begin showing up again I might pick one for that as well.

Nope haven’t seen longs in years either, only long rifle and shorts.
Last time I checked CCI still "loaded" them. I guess they make it once every 5 years or so. Probably the most useless ctg. ever made.

Those of you with 190s marked for anything other than LR and who have fired "lesser" ammo in them, do the guns cycle normally? Or do they simply become bolt-actions with anything less than .22LR?

My current 190 is marked Long and Long Rifle. I've shot a few shorts in it and it seemed to work fine.

It's been many many years since I've shot anything except LR ammo in mine (1980's). It functioned just fine with shorts, longs or long rifle ammo.
