Any one have experience with this ammo?
Just received 500 rounds of the stuff, it even has the NATO circled cross stamp.

Edit: Sorry about that thought you were confusing .308 Winchester and 7.62 NATO. Setting sarcasm back to normal :) See my post below Winchester white box 7.62 NATO is safe and decent I have a bunch of it myself.

You are serious you don't know what 7.62 NATO is but you bought 500 rounds? It is the military version of the .308 (not interchangeable though) to be used in M14s, FALs, AR10s and such full sized battle rifles. What is the headstamp? Depending who makes it it can range from superb to prone to making rifles go boom.

I think he knows what it is.

Winchester made their own 7.62 x 51 NATO spec. I have used it and it works great. I have 22 boxes I keep as back up.

You can shoot mil spec 7.62 nato in and rifle chambered for a 308 win. No harm will come from it. 7.62 nato has a lower pressure than the 308 win.

SAMMI max for the 308 is 62,000psi
SAMMI max for the 762 is 50,000psi.

So you can shoot 762 in a 308 but you shouldn't shoot a 308 in a 762.

Other than pressure these are exactly the same cartridge as is the 556 and 223 rem.

But on the DPMS LAR-308AP4

The reciever is stamped .308
the barrel 7.62x51.

Is it safe to shoot commercial 308 in that?

To the OP the actual Winchester white box Q3130 headstamp WCC XX is decent stuff of average accuracy if that is what you have.

Depends on who you ask and if they are having a good day or not. I shoot commercial .308 Winchester in my M1A I just keep the bullet 165 grains or under. Not sure what the guideline is for the AR 10 if you don't know for sure stick to the NATO spec ammo.

Here we go again. There is no SAAMI max for the 7.62x51, since it's not a commercial round. The pressure spec's set by the gov't for the 7.62x51 are 50,000psi, BUT the pressure is obtained using the copper crusher method, so the 50,000 max pressure is actually 50,000 C.U.P. Since the .30-06 is rated at 50,000 C.U.P. and 60,000psi, we can safely assume that the 7.62x51 generates about 60,000psi when measured using a peizo electric transducer such as SAAMI uses. So, the difference in max pressure between the 7.62x51 and the .308 is negligible, and as long as there is no platform restrictions (as with a .308 chambered M1 Garand), they are essentially interchangeable.

Why the crap has no one who has access to the proper equipment simply compared some surplus 7.62x51 with some commercial .308 to get us a "real" answer once and for all?

ammo

I asumed too much I guess.
Got my first M1A in 1979. Still have it along with 2 Armalite AR 10s and one FAL.
I know the difference between .308 and 7.62 NATO.
I had never seen the Winchester before and just wondered if it was decent or not.
I also have a small stash of Aussie and a large stash of SA.
Thanks for the information.

Straight off Armalite's website

From Tech Note #45

"ArmaLite’s larger AR-10 rifles are all chambered with 7.62mm NATO chambers. .308 Winchester (SAAMI standard) ammunition functions perfectly in the 7.62mm chambers."

So as far as the maker of AR-10s is concerned, 308 is safe in 7.62 AR-10s

johnson i agree to an extent

when using an older gun like an ishapore 2a enfield i dont like to chance it but when using a brand new gun like an ar-10 the makers have probably thought about it and included an idiot factor in the design so they will be safe using both

Winchester NATO 7.62x51 is fairly new, not to be confused with the WWB that is marked 7.62x51 147 Gr FMJ

From my FAL the WWB NATO is on par with the Port I also have. And it is boxer primed.
While I don't have a Chrony I can say that the regular WWB is a softer shooting round. About the same as OFV ammo.

If I am shooting NATO spec ammo or Remington 150 Gr soft points the regulator is on 4. WWB or OFV and I have to close the gas off 2 clicks or it short strokes.
Edited to add ...
I built my rig with a headspace of 1.632
All I have fed it is ammo under 168 grain and it eats it all reliably. YMMV

I was over on ammoman.com and found this description of Winchester NATO Q3130

WINCHESTER PACKAGING MARKED 7.62mm
MANUFACTURED TO NATO SPECIFICATIONS

7.62 WINCHESTER - 147 GRAIN
COPPER CLAD STEEL JACKET BULLET - LEAD CORE
THIS AMMO HAS THE NATO HEADSTAMP

Is this correct for Winchester q3130? A copper clad steel jacket bullet?

I have searched the web and I can't find any other specific reference to the bullet jacket on q3130
