I've got a friend looking to sell a Winchester 97 black diamond model (I listed it here once, but my price was too high, I think). I don't know collectible shotguns at all, so I would appreciate some advice on what the market value of this particular gun might be.

It's a takedown variant, with the normal long barrel. It's been reblued at some point, and the finish is very nice but not perfect. In addition, the bolt and a few other bits in the action were chromed. The receiver and barrel have different serial numbers, but they both indicate 1910 manufacture. The gun has a rubber buttpad, and I don't know if that's original or someone's add-on. The wood is in good shape, but has some scuffs and a small crack behind the trigger guard.

Any idea what it might be worth?

I paid $450.00 for my Black Diamond last year, but it's all original, with the exception of the bolt, which isn't marked "Trap".

From the description of your friend's gun, it's not collectable, per se. With all the mixed parts, chromed pieces, rebluing and added buttpad, it's just a shooter.

I would estimate it's value (without seeing it, of course) between $350 and $400. It would be less if there isn't any adjustment left in the barrel to action adjustment cog.

Hope this helps.

I know the people that have them like to think they are worth around 2000 dollars. They would like to keep them rather than sell them I guess.

There is one at my shop that has been sitting in the rack for months on end. It has 1400 on the tag.

Guess it will sit there longer.

This is a parts gun plain and simple. Non matching numbers don't make it a black diamond even if one part has been a black diamond. The refinish ruins any collector value. If put on Gun Broker I would think that bidding will top out at around $400.00 IMO.

Looked up your Winchester 97 Black Diamond on Guns America and they listed several. Prices varied as to condition and other factors.

Can't say I'm all that surprised - thanks, guys. I'll convey the news to my buddy.

Respectfully - check out Auction Arms, and Gunbroker, as has been suggested, and then deduct darn near half for the refinish and chrome...unfortunately. (yeah, I know, pretty much all this has been suggested...) jest my 2 cents..
