Looks like it's supposed to be one of those new synth. stocked, modern looking "Budget" rifles like the Ruger American or the Rem. 783. Not a huge fan of those types of rifles myself, not because they're crap (most of them aren't from what I've heard, good shooters actually and easily capable of getting meat in the freezer, or holes in paper), its just because I'd rather go with the wood stock and blued metal classics like a M70 or a 700 or a 77 Hawkeye.

I see a lot of Browning-esq features in that rifle, and it looks like it has the Tikka style stock mounted recoil lug. I kind of like the rifle, it would make a good loaner/backup rifle (I can't be loaning out my M70's...). I bet it will shoot well, I wonder what kind of street price It will have.

Well I don't blame you for being stingy with you M70s, I would too. As far as price, I'm predicting about $350-$500 w/ or w/o a scope, about the same as other rifles like this.

I like Shakespeare's advice, via Polonius...especially with my guns and my cars.

"neither a borrower nor a lender be"

See, here's what bothers me about this proposed or pending rifle. In kindergarden we were all taught to keep our eyes on our own paper, and not copy. As I look across other "entry-level rifle" for lack of another term, I see Mossberg's MVP, Ruger's American and now Winchester's XPR, the latest.

I have no clue if they are going to be good, or great. But, at present, Winchester is hitting the ball out-of-the-park with their current production M70s. Why dilute the effort. Did Ruger see Mossberg's move, then Winchester said, "Hey, we're losing market..."? To me, and saying this in advance, it simply screams "copy-cat!"

That stuff happens everywhere, not just in the firearms industry. And almost ALL of our modern bolt actions are "copy cats" of the Mauser 98 more or less.

Sure does. Remember the Ford Pinto and the Mercury Bobcat? The saddest thing those copy-cats had in common was the resultant flames post-rearending. Sad part, I drove one to high school each day.

Looks like Winchester spent about the same amount on marketing that it did on development of that rifle. I suppose the company thought it could compete with Ruger and Remington, but that seems like a pretty crowded price point right now.

It's unlikely that those will be made by Miroku. Most of the Winchester rifles were made here until a short while ago, when assembly (and maybe production by now) was shifted to Portugal, if I recall correctly. Miroku makes mostly shotguns and lever guns.

If I just looked at various things... it's almost a Tikka... the bolt shroud, the recoil lug (but they don't call it that... they call it a "pad")... the same hole through the bolt handle... interesting. It's kind of an ingenious trigger, but it's all going to depend on the actual feel.

The world is changing, no matter how much we old guys want to keep seeing pretty blue and wood with figure in it...

Are the M70s still made in the states at least?

Miroku makes the Browning A-Bolt and X-Bolt

the M70 parts are made in the USA and assembled in Portugal
