I've got an itch for a new rifle. :) Thinking .223 because I already reload for it. I'm looking or a bolt action. It would be used for paper punching, and varmints maybe. I'd like to work up to distances as far as 500 yards or so if I can. My budget right now is ~$500 for the rifle. Am I limited to just Ruger American, Predator, Savage Axis and Axis II ? What else should I be looking at ? What would another $100 get me ?

FWIW I own a Ruger American in .243, also own a Winchester M70, and a Remington 700 so I'm not really partial to any specific manufacturer.

A Mossberg is another option. I believe they have a rifle and scope package for your budget. Don't forget the used rack at your local gun shop. Savages seem to be on the used rack at really good prices.

I'd go with an 8 twist Tikka like this:

It will most likely shoot well, and the faster twist will allow you to shoot the heavier bullets preferred for longer range.

Good point, I definitely want a 1 in 8 twist at a minimum. I know the Rugers have that, not sure about Savages ? I hear great things about the Tikka. I've never shouldered one, maybe never seen one.

I have 2 Ruger Predators in 308 and 6.5 Creedmoor as well as a Compact in 223, all were under $400. All 3 are exceptionally accurate and have barrels twisted for target bullets. I don't think you'll get a more accurate rifle under $1000, and not many over $1000.

I would be looking for a Ruger American Ranch or the Mossberg patriot, that would leave extra money in your budget for optics. Also check the used racks for the CZ 527, I just picked one up used in great condition for $500.

Howa mini, or 527....same problem

Only guns im aware of that come in a 1-8 are the ruger and tikka.

I have a Mossberg MVP thunder ranch and I love it. I shoot mine with a Gemtch G5 suppressor and with 77 grain MK 262 or Hornady 75 grain BTHP it is a MOA rifle. It takes AR mags- I use the 10 and 20 round PMAGS. The one that came with it is junk, but the PMAGS work great. So far I have taken 2 deer and a fox with it. I also have a Ruger American ranch in 308, so I know its a good rifle too but I'm totally happy with the MVP-TR.

If your budget is $500, an extra $100 isn't going to make much of a difference. Extra $500, then you're taking actual change.
