I saw one for $795 that looked basically barely used. The metal looked to be unpeened (or whatever the word is), like it wasn't worked on. It had zero scratches on the wood. The crown was undamaged It also came with the original box. I realize I would probably have to look closer to see if all the parts were matching, but if they were, is that a fair deal?

i seen a Winchester M1 carbine at the local gun shop yesterday going for 800 big ones and it looked like it just got back from Iwo Jima , beat up .

No idea, it was in the back of the store. What should I look for to see if it's somewhat original?

Sorry, I forgot to specify: What parts of the gun should I look at to see if it is somewhat original? The box probably is from the CMP, im guessing, but i'll have to look again.

I have 2 restored Winchesters and have been offered a lot more then that. That sounds like a good price for a good rifle. It's probably been reworked. A original Winchester will go for over $1200.00.
See if you can remove the gun from the stock and look for import markings. Sometimes they are marked out of sight.

Well, someone else picked it up. Damn, I had a feeling when I first saw it that it was a good deal ;). I'll be looking for one later on for sure.

Hi,
Welcome to a not very exclusive club:banghead:. And don't think it guarantees to make you any sharper next time either:what:.
Hope you find one again;). Worked for me with a Marlin 39, so it can happen.

Arlington Ordnance imports were boxed, so it could be an import.

You can easily check the bbl for being Winchester. If the dealer will let you separate the wood from the metal, you can check the slide and trigger parts as well.

If it is new-looking wood, it is probably refinished or a commercial stock. Look for whatever stamps you can see on the left side of the stock and on the pistol grip.

A really original carbine would have a flip sight on it and no bayo lug. If it has these, it's been through an arsenal at least once.

Nowadays, that's a decent deal if it's actually got Winchester parts (receiver and major parts), and if there's no Blue Sky import marking. If it has the Blue Sky, then it's not so great. Winchester was the 2nd most plentiful make, so it's not all that rare.
