I have a 1930 model 54 in 30-06 w/ a stainless barrel
and put a one piece redfield jr base on it (was already drilled 1 hole in the bridge) and a redfield 4-12 ao older scope, I am looking for a swing safety as in this configuration, the safety doesnt operate. also curious if there are any aftermarket triggers that would fit? Thanks for your time and what a great site!

It is my understanding that a Timney aftermarket trigger for a Mod 70 will fit but will require the underside of the cocking piece reprofiling to match the shape of the trigger sear. Maybe best done by a gunsmith if you're not conversant with this sort of work, it could lead to a dangerous trigger if not done properly. Don't underestimate the improvement that can be made to the standard trigger with some stoning of mating surfaces, again, by someone who knows, for safety reasons

thank you!

that was a very knowledgable post! i will wotk with what i have then thanks! anyone else have thoughts on the safety??

I have a buehler (?) low swing safety for mine. I don't think these are available new now but i have seen them on Ebay, (I was looking for one before I rememered I already had one. Duh! ) Failing that, it may be possible to adapt one from another rifle, I'll try & remember to have a measure up in the next few days.
Thanks for the compliment above. :)

Sorry to be a bit slow on this one, got the relevant bits out today & had a measure up. I think it would be possible to modify a Mauser 96 safety like Brownells sell.http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/productdetail.aspx?p=13149
The shaft is too long & slightly too fat (6mm,0.235" om Winchester,6.2mm,0.245 on Mauser) but after trimming for length it would only be too fat at the rear, at least on my one, it was reduced in diameter through the mid part. The wing was identical on the Mauser 98 & Win 54 ones that I have, so it would be a matter of trimming the shaft to length, reprofiling the end to match what was there & slimming the rear of the shaft. My Win 54 one has a scallop out of the side of the shaft at one point but I cannot see any reason for this to be there. The round piece that the wing slots into will also need reducing in diameter by about 0.05" It would help to know someone with a die grinder on a lathe, I imagine these are hardened steel.
