I am new to this forum so...hello. I just aquired a Win 54 from an old friend. I did a little research on this beast and learned it was the prototype of what we now call the model 70. However, it was also Winchesters product of the Mauser 98. My question is this, the barrel on the gun is definatley Win model 54 .270. However, the action is different. It has a 4 digit serial and the letters REM (although the R cannot be read that well if it is, in fact, an R). I plugged the serial in winchester's site and the date 1929 came up.

So my theory is this. During the first years of production, did Win use Mauser actions? My other question would be the value of this gun? The gun is in excellent condition. Any help, neat history or anything on the gun would be great!
