Women defends herself in Chicago

So this girl was attacked at gun point and managed to escape, but in the comments everyone is slamming the bystander who sat and watched. Seriously, what was the guy supposed to do?
Considering the gun control in that city, he was likely unarmed. Was he supposed to intervene when the bad guy was armed and he wasn't?
I consider myself a chivalrous guy, but really, what would I or you be able to do in his situation?

Absolutely was my first thought also, though I would accept those consequences if it saved her life. But unless I was armed, I don't see what I could do except get myself killed.
