I'm buying a house and decided to not waste money on a safe, but instead build a concrete saferoom in the basement. it would double as a gun safe, as well as a shelter. but that's just me.
I agree that you will probably be okay with 2x4 studs and 2 layers of plywood or OSB, while also reinforcing the door. It would take a concerted effort to get through that. However, I also agree that fire is a real hazard, so I would at least buy a small fire-safe (maybe about 10-guns or so) for your more prized possessions, whether monetary value or sentimental value.
