What was the worst gun advice you ever received from a well-meaning individual? It could be related to buying a gun, marksmanship, training, safety, cleaning, etc.

My worst advice came from my dad. Sure, he spent 22 years in the U.S. Army, did two tours of Vietnam in the infantry, and actually went in when the Army still wore brown boots, but he just ain't a gun guy. He told me to keep oil in the barrel of my rifle and not to worry about cleaning it out because the first round would do that. It wasn't until years later I found out that this could be a harmful practice.

Worst Gun Advice

Don't worry if it says LE only on it. It's ok and legal cause thats how you bought it :cuss: :banghead:

you might as well get what you can for that Remington 660, since nobody's interested in them anyway.....

Worse advice:

You need to sell that old, blued (almost mint) Colt Diamondback and get one of these brand new, stainless steel model 67s.

Even worse, I did it. Still bugs me after 20 some years.

"Go ahead and get your C&R, you'll save money"

:scrutiny:

Well, perhaps on a per gun basis anyway. :D The problem is that the quantity of incoming weapons has increased quite a bit.

When I was told that a trigger would smoothen & lighten out after I fired "a few rounds" through it. Almost 3000 rounds later (I was being overly optimistic that the trigger would improve!), it was still heavy & mushy...the grittiness was gone, but it was still crap! :what:

To summarize:

"Get a Glock 21. If it doesn't fit your hand you're not holding it right. It has the same grip diameter as a 1911. GET A GLOCK 21! Forget the revovlers, kid, and get yourself a GLOCK! Revolvers are for hunting and cowboy shooting, not defense."

I never bought a Glock 21, and doubt I ever will. If it doesn't fit it doesn't fit.

"Stick with a 5.56mm rifle, an AR-15. It's cheaper to shoot and ligther than anything in .308. M14s, FALs, and G3s are Yesterday. The AR-15 is Today."

I enjoy my FAL more than I ever did either of my previously owned ARs.

"Get a .22 for your first hangun. Even if it's your ONLY handgun for a while."

I didn't have any trouble diving right in to .45ACP. It's really not hard to shoot, if you take a little time to practice on occasion.

Nightcrawler--Starting with a .22 rimfire is common advice because it's the safest advice. You yourself may have been perfectly happy starting off with the .45 ACP. However, imagine what happens when a brand new shooter who may be more sensitive to recoil starts out with one. He/She may never pick up another gun again due to the recoil and the loud report (compared to a .22). The first shooting experience should be pure pleasure. Then it's just another addiction :D

don't buy the coonan... Its an old has been and will loose value , ahem I did buy it and had several offers to sell it at 4X the price ,and if you reload your own you'll blow up your gun .. ahem it been many moon and still have my fingers and house and firearms .

I understand the bit about the .22. But this fellow wouldn't let UP. I said and said, I didn't want a .22, I'm not a recoil sensative person.

He kept pressing, though. Start with a .22. Work your way up.

Work my way up? Why do I buy after the .22, a .32? Then a 9mm? Then a .40? THEN a .45?

Don't have that kind of money.

'bout 15 years old, I'm told...

" I know the stock has a crack...been that way for a while now...load her up and shoot..." So I loaded up the old '06...bang, bang --YEooowww!

'Huh...never figured that would happen...WHOA!...what a bruise!!..."

Had a guy tell me that DA meant the gun had an automatic double tap feature. You pull the trigger once and it fires twice. This guy is a self-proclaimed ex-Marine Recon and ex-Swat officer.

"I wouldn't worry about stocking up on hi-cap mags.. They already have increased by $5.00 or so. The ban will never pass."

I must not have put powder in that one, just fire another round, it will push the one that is stuck in the barrel out. Yea right. This from the guy who's .38 special reloads I was using. Nope, I wasn't that stupid and I don't shoot others reloads anymore.

Buy a .243, mine will blow a groundhog in two at 500 yards!

It doesn't? What bullets are you using?

Actually, I've never shot a groundhog, but those 65 Gr VMax sure makes a mess out of a raccoon.

Worst advice... Hrmm... Guess I've been pretty lucky in general. I guess the whole 'ditch the steel 1911 because Glocks are the wave of the future.'

Can't say it's not true, but it's not true for me. ;)

"Don't waste your money on an Enfield" This was about 15 years ago when they were selling for $39.95. Thanks dad.

"get a Glock, they are the coolest guns ever!" This from my best friend for years. He bought a Glock and suddenly became an expert on guns.

a small derringer in a very big caliber

was told to "wrap a towel around the grip"because it wouldnt hurt as much.then after i still refused..offered 50 bucks to just shoot it once.tried it but without the towel.the 50 bucks didnt even cover the xrays of the fractured wrist.

Something just isn't RIGHT...

about that Navy Luger. You should return it......

from a guy who wanted to go get it himself.

As a newby, I returned it. It was gone before Mr. Advice could get there.

(I also neglected to TELL him I returned it)
