I've been posted abroad for more than 10 years and where I am in Asia, the original made in Czecholsovakia CZ-75 (rounded trigger guard) goes for about $550 NIB while the CZ SP01 Shadow sells for $1070. Since the latter is almost twice as expensive as the former, I am thinking of buying the original CZ-75. Does the SP01 really offer so much more than its earlier ancestor?

I will be using the pistol for target practice and for concealed carry.

When you say "original" do you mean the short-rail version or the "Pre-B" version?
I have a feeling that you mean the latter, but if the former then that is an unbelieveable price.

The short answer is NO it does not. The CZ-75 SP-01 is a polymer frame pistol with the new trigger system. From what you are saying about price, it seems that it is a supply and demand issue not a "is one better than the other" issure.

I am not sure you will be able to find a Pre-B new in box CZ-75 here in the states, so a purchase of one of those would be to your advantage.

Your question poses more problems than answers.

Asia is a large area and I am not sure a Foreign National would be allowed to carry a firearm in the country you are at.
for concealed carry

No idea of what caliber the CZ-75 you are planning to purchase is, 9mm Luger (9x19) or 9mm Markoff (9x18) or someother caliber. What would be your supply of ammo?

If you are planning to return to the US how will or if you will be able to transport the weapon home, import permits or just sell it overseas and which one would bring you the most return on your investment if sold there. (CZ75 or SP-01 resale price)

If you are military or embassy staff and are allowed to carry a sidearm, wouldn't it have to be an M-9 or are you allowed to carry personal firearms.

As you can see, your post brings up more questions than answers as to if you should spend the extra money for the SP-01.

If you were here in the US I would say get the SP-01 and get your best price from Bud's, but they will not ship overseas.

Jim

My persoal choice was the CZ 75 P-01, shorter and lighter.

If you can get pre B 75 that would be a nice pistol. I didn't know they were available new. I have the sp-01 shadow and it is worth the $1000. Here in the states they run around $900 plus transfer and taxes. The gun is not polymer as previously posted. It is all steel and very heavy for a 9mm. The shadow has a very good trigger pull with a short reset because it lacks a firing pin block. Mine is converted to single action only which really makes the trigger pull wonderful. It basicly shoots like a very reliable hi cap 1911. Another thing to consider are the sights. Basic 75b sights are ok but the shadow sights are much better. With the competition style rear and the fiber optic front the sight picture is xlnt. Now would I want to carry a sp-01 shadow? Probably not because of how heavy they are. You might want to look into the aluminum framed compacts or even the all steel compact which will shave off quite a bit of weight. These guns will all be very accurate too.

Jim243:

The SP-01 is NOT a polymer framed pistol -- it's steel. the SP-01 Phantom is the polymer framed model, and the one's I've seen do NOT have the new Omega trigger. (I think the P-07 is the first gun that has the Omega trigger as a standard feature; it may be that the Omega trigger can be retrofitted to the SP-01 in either the steel or polymer versions. The custom shop offers a P-01 modified in that manner.)

The pre-B's have great triggers, but they also have a few parts -- depending on how old they are -- that are increasingly hard to find. (Ones with a pinhole in the safety lever have an internal coil spring that simply can't be found in the U.S.) You also can't find sights that can be used with the old guns -- so gunsmith work is required if you want better sights or night sights.

(Been there, done that.)

A SP-01 purchased from the CZ Custom Shop will give you an excellent trigger and a gun designed to do well in IDPA and USPSA.

A NIB CZ-75 is quite rare. A NIB CZ-75B generally goes for about that price. Be sure of what you're getting. The "B" denotes a firing pin Block and can generally be felt in the trigger. Newer Bs have less good triggers, but they can be tuned -- and you'd still have a warranty. It's unlikely you'd have any kind of warranty with a pre-B 75, even if it's NIB, ad they're all 20+ years old.

Thanks Walt, I was checking the CZ web-site and can not find anything on the SP-01 Shadow.

Thanks again for the info.

Thanks Walt, I was checking the CZ web-site and can not find anything on the SP-01 Shadow.

There are several types of Shadows -- including several 75B Shadows and a SP-01 Shadow. They're all serious competition guns. Look on farther down the page to the CZ Competition section. There's even a LONG SLIDE which I had not seen before. (I don't visit the sit all that often.) http://www.cz-usa.com/products/by-category/handguns/

I'm playing with a SIG P226 X Five Competition in .40, right now, and if that doesn't pan out, I'll sell it and go for a CZ Tactical Sport (perhaps in 9mm), which I've long wanted. (I got the X Five because someone made me an offer I couldn't resist, when I happened to have the money. That doesn't happen that often.)
