What would you have done?
I'm not saying this was the most tactical thing you could possibly do and getting shot was a high probability in this case.
However, when under extreme stress due to some jaggoff waving his pistol around, and pointing it at everyone. I'm not sure I would have responded much differently. Although, as a 200+ pounder myself, in that kind of adrenaline generating situation. There is a high likeliehood the Mott's applesauce jar would have broke over the gunman's noggin.

Does anybody else think the mental picture of beating a robber senseless with a jar of applesauce is just priceless? My mother used to feed me that stuff when I was a kid. Who knew what a weapon it was?!

There's no shortage of heroes in Gomez Grocery in East Germantown.
Yesterday about 12:15 p.m., a tall, 190-pound gunman walked in and announced: "This is a stickup!"
With 15 customers inside, the 23-year-old gunslinger locked the door of the store on Walnut Lane near Baynton Street, said Det. Curtis Matthews, of Northwest Detectives.
"The man turned around and you could see his gun, pointing at the [customers,]" said a 15-year-old customer, who was buying a smoked turkey sandwich, but didn't want to give her name.
"I got down and started shaking real hard," she added.
The gunman jumped on the freezer next to the cash register and pointed the gun at store owner Eddie Gomez, who was behind the counter, she said.
A quick-thinking patron, Thomas Santana, 66, then grabbed the gunman around his legs from behind - in a "bear hug" - as he stood on the freezer with his back to the customers, said Matthews.
Gomez came from behind the counter and helped Santana, 5-foot-4, wrestle the 6-foot-1 gunman to the floor, said Matthews.
Startled, the gunman fired two wild shots, shooting himself once in the head - the bullet entered and exited his head. Still, he wouldn't give up his gun, Matthews said.
So, Santana grabbed a nearby jar of Mott's applesauce off a shelf and slugged him four times in the head.
"Finally, the guy passes out," said Matthews. "There's blood everywhere - on the floor, all over." Meantime, the 15-year-old girl and her cousin had fled to the kitchen with another man and woman and closed the door. "I started crying and praying and stuff," the girl said.
Several minutes later, the girls peeked out the kitchen door and saw police. The shooter was being taken out the door on a stretcher.
The gunman, whose name was not released last night, was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center where he was in stable condition after being treated for head injuries.
He is expected to be charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, attempted robbery, reckless endangerment and weapons violations.

Be careful, though: Brady might want to restrict applesauce sales. When applesauce is outlawed, only outlaws will have applesauce. You can have my applesauce when you take it from my cold, dead hands. A small jar of applesauce with you is far better than a one gallon can of it at home in the pantry.

I different article I read said that the jar was actually a restricted "Black Talon" applesauce jar because it had razor sharp pieces that came out on impact and was designed to cut and cause more damage than the plastic applecause containers civilians are supposed to have......

If applesauce is sooo dangerous, what the heck are doing feeding it to our kids??? Maybe we should just leave a jar in the lunchboxes to be used in case a bully attacks.

From now on, all applesauce jars should be sold with a lid lock to prevent NDs (Negligent Delicious'). It'll also cut down on all the drive-by fruitings that are becoming common on today's mean streets.

More likely a deep graze--I'd think an entry/exit head wound would affect one's mobility!

What probably happened was the bullet "entered" his head on one side, did not penetrate the skull, and just slid along the surface of the bone, underneath the skin, and exited at some point on the other side of his head. It's not that uncommon, particularly with low power rounds, though it's happened with the more powerful calibers too.

After reading about this legislation was immediately passed to ban apple sauce in the state of California.

Honestly, I don't see much to critique.
Took him from behind, overwhelmed him with a coordinated attack (not bad for two total strangers.) Took him down, controlled the gun, couldn't get it away, so they improvised a bludgeon and he got KTFO.
Don't know what else you could do. Those two "wild shots" could have been tragic, but unarmed against a gun without letting him get any shots off, even wild ones, is asking for magic.
If some guy with a gun had locked me in the store with him and then turned his back, I hope I would do something similar, although I hope I would go for control of the gun first. But hey, their way worked. Good on 'em.
