Would this be a fair trade?

I have a smith model 29-3 with a nickel plated finish . I would estimate it at about 98% . A friend wants to trade me a mountain gun 629 or 625 . The 629 has bear pawprints on the cylinder, not sure about the 625. Would either of us be getting a fair trade?

I won't weigh in on fairness, however if y'all are both happy. That's all the matters.

As far as MG go, I just picked up a model 25. It has the lock, but it doesn't bother me any. Haven't shot it yet, but I suspect it will be just fine.

Life's too short, do what makes you happy.

Really hard to say, exactly, but I don't particularly want any nickle-plated firearms. They're pretty but when the finish starts to go, well, it isn't pretty. I'll take stainless over nickle for sheer utility.

Now, I'd really like a 625 in my stable so I'm biased. Will you still have a .44 Mag? Do you need a .44 Mag? The Mountain Gun is a real pleasure as well. I guess I'd take either over a nickle-plated 29.

Sam, Ill still have my ruger superblackhawk in .44 mag , but I like the idea of a 4 inch or shorter barreled .45 colt or .44 mag that i could conceal.

Well, me too! My utility wheelgun is a 4" 629 that gets heavy use in IDPA matches as well as occasional CCW duty. Very much like that M.G., but with a slightly heavier barrel.

Now, you can do surprising things with that 625. You can go pretty heavy, using .45 Super or .460 Rowland loads that a .45 autoloader might not care for. A real heavy .44 Mag load will still surpass it, but not by as much as you'd think.

I was not aware that the 625 could shoot .45 super or .460 rowland. Are you refering to the .45 auto 625? the one I might get is in .45 colt.

Aaaaaah. Sorry. Yeah, when I think 625, I always assume the cool .45 ACP moon-clip gun. A .45 Colt version is interesting, too, but I don't like the little tiny rims on .45 Colt cases slipping past the star and hanging up the gun. If it's a .45 Colt, personally I'd pass.

I agree with osteodoc08, if both of you are happy, it's a fair deal.

I really wouldn't want the lock if it was going to be used for more than a range gun.

You could probably find the barrel you want, though not necessarily very easily. However, having a gunsmith fit and install it would probably be a significant portion of what the gun is worth. In other words, you could sell it as is and put the money toward what you want.

Heck, if you want a 4" .44, that mountain gun would be a stellar choice! Bear paw prints might even be cute. Is that, by chance, an un-fluted cylinder? That's pretty uncommon and might be worth quite a bit to someone...well, maybe even with the artwork.

I would do that trade in a heartbeat. It's been my experience that nickle finished revolvers are the most iliquid when it comes time to sell. That said, I'm a sucker for a nickle gun.

As far as changing the barrel on yours, I'll just repeat what my trusted gunsmith told me; "don't go there".

From a strictly financial standpoint I think you would easily come out ahead on the trade. Mountain guns always sell for a premium around here.

I wouldn't fret. I would value a nickel 29 above a more pedestrian 625 or 629 mtn. gun anytime.

I do have a 629 (3"), but my nickel 4" 29 is a much nicer gun, and the heavier profile barrel makes for friendlier shooting, though slightly less quick handling, vs that mtn. gun.

Hell,I wouldnt even mind a blued or stainless 629 with a 6 inch barrel. Ill put it up here in the selling corner see if any other texan wants to make a deal.
